There are three recordable versions of DVD-ROM: DVD-R, DVD-RAM, and DVD-RW. DVD-R can record data once (sequentally only), while DVD-RAM and DVD-RW can be rewritten hundreds of thousands of times. Final versions of the DVD-R and DVD-RAM specifications were published in August 1997 (see 6.1). DVD-RW will be finalized by the end of 1998.
