Q - Can I get baptism, death, and marriage certificates from local record offices??
A - Church Baptism certificates can be obtained from the County Record Office (or Diocesan Record Office, if different), for ANY baptism for which these record offices hold the records, irrespective of date. These cost £2.50, post free BUT it is usually far less expensive to ask the record office to send you a print-out of the relevant entry, provided of course that it is on microfiche/film. However, please note that BIRTH certs are available from Jul 1837 and it is worth the extra £4.
Q - What are the problems in getting Marriage Certificates from a local register office?
A - The basic problem is that they are not indexed. Thus unless you know the place of marriage, the poor old registrar would have to search through all the registers for each church/chapel to try and find your particular marriage. Understandably, local registrars may not be willing to undertake such a search.
