When trying to match the output of your amplifier to the power handling capacity of particular loudspeakers, please try to match them as closely as possible. Remember that more damage can be caused to a pair of speakers using an under-powered amplifier than an over-powered one. Driving loudspeakers with an under-powered amplifier introduces elements of distortion resulting in clipping of the signal.

That depends on how much power you need to have available for each speaker. For background music or moderate listening levels you should provide at least 15 watts for each speaker. Then it is just a matter of doing the math. Example: Amplifier output=80 watts per channel. 80 watts divided by 15 watts = 5.3 or (5) pairs of speakers. Generally speaking, the power of the amplifier should match the power of the speakers. It's just a guideline, but if you increase the power of the amplifier beyond the rating of the speaker, the speaker could be damaged. An under powered amplifier is also a problem. Placing the ZEROs close to the speaker typically provides best results. Adding the ZEROs close to the speakers means that not only does the amplifier benefit from the higher impedance, but the speaker cables benefit as well. a beginner, you certainly don't need a stadium-sized earth-shaker. To learn, get something relatively small that can handle the low end. Be sure to get a bass amp however; you can seriously damage a guitar amp's speaker by running bass through it, and it won't sound that good anyway.
