Why is it necessary to match my speakers to my amplifier?

Mission - FAQ
When trying to match the output of your amplifier to the power handling capacity of particular loudspeakers, please try to match them as closely as possible. Remember that more damage can be caused to a pair of speakers using an under-powered amplifier than an over-powered one. Driving loudspeakers with an under-powered amplifier introduces elements of distortion resulting in clipping of the signal.

How many speakers can be connected to one amplifier?

Phoenix Gold :: Support :: Frequently Asked Questions
That depends on how much power you need to have available for each speaker. For background music or moderate listening levels you should provide at least 15 watts for each speaker. Then it is just a matter of doing the math. Example: Amplifier output=80 watts per channel. 80 watts divided by 15 watts = 5.3 or (5) pairs of speakers. To provide at least 15 watts to each speaker, the number of speakers should not exceed (5) pair. If more speakers are desired, additional amplifiers are recommended. See similar questions...

What size amplifier should I get for my speakers?

NAD Electronics :: Frequently Asked Questions
Generally speaking, the power of the amplifier should match the power of the speakers. It's just a guideline, but if you increase the power of the amplifier beyond the rating of the speaker, the speaker could be damaged. An under powered amplifier is also a problem. If the power amp clips because it is pushed too hard, the speakers can be damaged. These are two extremes...10 to 20 percent above or below the power amplifier rating is okay. Why do my m-cube speakers have to be connected to the active subwoofer rather than the amplifier?

Mission - FAQ
The M-cube active subwoofer acts in 3 different ways. Firstly, it acts as an amplifying device for all those low frequency effects (LFE) that you feel rather than hear and does this via an RCA phono lead. Secondly, by means of the umbilical cable, it amplifies all the channel specific information that the m-cube satellite speakers cannot reproduce simply because of their small size. Should I add the ZEROs close to my speakers or close to my amplifier?

ZEROs FAQ
Placing the ZEROs close to the speaker typically provides best results. Adding the ZEROs close to the speakers means that not only does the amplifier benefit from the higher impedance, but the speaker cables benefit as well. This benefit was not expected by me, yet is very real. The inductance and resistance in a speaker wire run is 1/4 less of a problem into 16 ohms as it would be into 4 ohms. See similar questions...

Because headphones are often used in portable applications, many headphone amps are conveniently battery powered. Headphone amps can also be used in a work station or desktop setting where they sometimes act as a switch between various sound sources or as a pre-amp for powered desktop speakers. How about an amplifier?

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions
a beginner, you certainly don't need a stadium-sized earth-shaker. To learn, get something relatively small that can handle the low end. Be sure to get a bass amp however; you can seriously damage a guitar amp's speaker by running bass through it, and it won't sound that good anyway. A headphone jack is a nice idea too, especially if you live with or near others who might not appreciate the vibratory epiphaenomena accompanying your musical excursions. See similar questions...
