When exactly should I generate an ICMP timeout message?

Virtual Router Assignment FAQ
ICMP timeout should be generated when the TTL field in the IP header of an incoming packet is one or zero before it is decremented. Only generating an ICMP message if the TTL of the packet is zero after decrementing will lead to strange traceroute output and won't get full credit. The stub code only saves the first 96 bytes of the packets it receives and the generated ICMP packets are 98 bytes, hence Ethereal's checksum does not take into account the last 2 bytes.

What are these messages about ''icmp-response bandwidth limit 300/200 pps'' in my log files?

Networking
This is the kernel telling you that some activity is provoking it to send more ICMP or TCP reset (RST) responses than it thinks it should. ICMP responses are often generated as a result of attempted connections to unused UDP ports. TCP resets are generated as a result of attempted connections to unopened TCP ports. What if I run out of packets?

FAQ Medifast diet
an emergency substitute for a packet, you can drink an 8 ounce glass of skim or low-fat milk for each supplement you will miss. Don't do this for more than one day. If you will be away from your Medifast supplies for longer than one day, focus on eating meals that are high-protein, low carbohydrates until you can return to your program. See similar questions...

What is ICMP?

ITPRC - TCP/IP FAQ
Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) defines a small number of messages used for diagnostic and management purposes. ICMP depends on IP to move packets around the network on its behalf. The fundamentals of ICMP are defined in RFC 792. RFC 1122 summarises the requirements that must be met by an ICMP implementation in an Internet host, and RFC 1812 summarises the ICMP requirements for an Internet router. See similar questions...

What are these packets for?

FAQ: Firewall Forensics (What am I seeing?)
Check the list of ports at the top of this document. If it is not listed there, then the only way to figure this out is to capture them with a sniffer and view their contents. For example, a common service that runs with a random port number is CORBA IIOP packets. Many services run at port 535, but it is frequently reconfigured to broadcast on other ports. If you look at the hex dump in the sniffer, you will see the letters "IIOP" somewhere in the contents. See similar questions...

FAQ 17) Why are these packets being Dropped/Rejected? How do I decode Shorewall log messages?

Shorewall FAQs

I host my own mail server and get the bounced back messages, what can I do?

Blue One Communications, Inc.
If you have a Domain Hosting account with Blue One and repeatedly get bounced-back messages saying that your mail could not be delivered because it was rejected due to it being on an RBL, your mail server could still be configured for Open Relay. Why do my packets go out from me with the callsign 'NOCALL' ?

TNOS Installation
Well chances are you are running 1.13 TNOS or later. A feature was added in 1.13 to assign the callsign 'NOCALL' to ax25 mycall and ax25 user. Make sure these are set to your callsign, or at least the callsign you want. It should also be noted that with TNOS 1.13 you should only need to do an ax25 user *if* you want it different from the 'ax25 mycall'. That bug is fixed in 1.14 and later. See similar questions...

Why do I get "network unreachable" under Slackware?

The Slackware Linux Project: Frequently Asked Questions
There are a couple of possibilities. For most users, things work right out of the box. However, if you're running into this problem here are two workarounds you can try: Reverse the broadcast and netmask arguments (and their variables) in the call to ifconfig in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1. Make sure you are not trying to route your own IP address - you shouldn't have to. Make sure the kernel you're using supports your hardware. See similar questions...

Q24: What is ICMP Protocol and "ping"?

faq_router
ICMP stands for 'Internet Control Message Protocol', it is a Network layer of Internet protocol that reports errors and provides other information relevant to IP packet processing. ICMP sends the following messages: Flow Control, Destination Unreachable, Redirecting Routes and Echo Message. For example, the UNIX command Ping is based on ICMP to test whether a particular computer is connected to the Internet. See similar questions...

What is a 'Ping' or ICMP Packet?

aspNetPing
A 'Ping' is a technique for sending an ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) packet(s) to a remote host. If the remote host is up, and supports ICMP, a control message, or packet, will be sent back to the sender. This technique provides a mechanism for feedback about communication problems in a networked environment. aspNetPing abstracts this mechanism in an easy to use manner for the programmer. For more information about ICMP, check out the RFC 792 at http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc792.html See similar questions...
