I use Macromedia Flash MX for all of the cartoons. If you can get your hands on it, try it out, but it tends to be expensive (I lucked out and got a copy from my dad). If you want to learn how to use it, there're a lot of great tutorials online (picking up a book is a great idea too). One good site I'd recommend is actionscripts.org. For recording voices, I use Goldwave, but only because it was a free download and I'm not yet fed up with it begging me to register.

Considering I do write software for a living, I would say that if you feel more comfortable buying commercial software, then please do so. However, in my research, I did not find any existing software packages which contain all the features that webtester currently supports. Also, I am not aware of any software, commercial or otherwise, which supports the features webtester will eventually have when the development process is further along.

It's software that you pay for and where you do not get access to the code. This is sometimes called closed source software. A good example would be Microsoft windows where you have to pay a licence fee for every copy you install. You also get no access to the code. With a commercial shop program we have to pay a fee to the writer for installing a copy for our customers. This is passed on to you as well as our install and setup fee.
