The two most common types of benign breast lumps are cysts and fibroadenomas. In addition, there are several other conditions that can present themselves as lumps, such as fat necrosis and sclerosing adenosis.

Many women develop breast lumps. In general, 80% of lumps are caused by benign (non-cancerous) changes in the breast. This percentage tends to fluctuate with age. For young women, more than 80% of breast lumps are benign. As a woman ages, her risk for breast cancer increases. The percentage of benign breast lumps in older women may be much lower than in younger women.

A benign breast condition is any non-cancerous breast abnormality. The most common benign breast conditions include fibrocystic change, benign breast tumors, and breast inflammation. Most benign breast conditions such as fibrocystic change or fibroadenomas (small tumors) do not increase a woman’s risk for breast cancer later in life.

We know 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, but, to date, it has been very difficult to identify who is at risk. Current risk models are good at identifying populations at risk, but that does not help the specific patient understand her risk. Further, 8 out of 9 women that develop breast cancer will not have a direct relative with the disease. In other words, most women who develop cancer are not traditionally defined as "high risk" for the disease.

It is estimated that half of all women in the U.S. will seek consultation for a breast disorder in their lifetime. Many of these women are diagnosed with benign breast disease, defined as any non-cancerous breast abnormality. The most common benign breast tumor is fibroadenoma. Fibroadenomas can grow up to 4 cm or larger, the size of a golf ball, and cause pain, anxiety and disfigurement.

The most common type of hernia is called an inguinal hernia. An inguinal hernia is caused by a weakness or defect in the lining of the abdominal (belly) wall or pelvic (groin) wall. It can be present at birth or develop over years. A hernia can also develop in the abdominal wall around a previous incision. This is called a ventral hernia.

The most frequently diagnosed cause of short stature is achondroplasia, a genetic condition that results in disproportionately short arms and legs. The average height of adults with achondroplasia is 4'0". Other relatively common genetic conditions that result in disproportionate short stature include spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita (SEDc), diastrophic dysplasia, pseudoachondroplasia, hypochondroplasia, and osteogenesis imperfecta (OI).

Not all-musculoskeletal pain is caused by arthritis. Pain can arise from irritation of tissues around joints, such Minor injury or overuse can cause localised pain, which often lasts only for a short period. Tennis elbow and housemaid’s knee are examples. In addition, more generalised pain can develop in muscles or joints in situations where there is no arthritis, e.g. fibromyalgia

There are many different kinds of cancer depending on where in the body the cancer starts and the type of cell involved. The most common types are prostate, breast, lung, and colorectal cancers. Out of every twenty cancer diagnoses, about three will be breast cancers, three will be prostate cancers, three will be lung cancers, and two will be colorectal. There will be about one in the bladder or kidney, one in the ovary, uterus or cervix, and one will be a lymphoma.

Breast cancer does not often occur in teens. However, it is important to take care of your body now. Knowledge of familial history is also important.

Because of the testicular failure, the testicle may be pushed to make small amounts of oestrogen, more than that seen in the normal male. This may therefore give rise to an increase in breast tissue. Similarly, testosterone injections can often also be transformed into oestrogen giving rise to excessive breast tissue. For that reason there is a significant, but still very small, increased risk of breast cancer.

Although there has been no correlation with the herbal ingredients and breast cancer, any woman with known breast conditions should consult with their physician prior to taking any supplements.. back to the top of the page

Acute Angle Closure Glaucoma: acute closure of the peripheral drainage angle, characterized by a sudden increase in intraocular pressure. Chronic Angle Closure Glaucoma: the iris obstructs the eye's drainage angle in a slow, progressive fashion. Primary Open Angle Glaucoma: the drainage angle is open but does not allow fluid to drain adequately for unknown reasons. Pseudoexfoliation Glaucoma: deposits of a fibrillary material obstruct drainage of fluid from the eye.

Familiarize yourself with the following options in breast implant surgery and be prepared to discuss with your surgeon the following issues: Depending on the desired shape you wish to achieve, you and your surgeon may choose a round or contoured implant shape. Generally, the larger you want your cup size, the larger the breast implant the surgeon will consider (measured in cubic centimeters, or cc's).

There are risks associated with any surgery, even procedures as uncomplicated as breast enlargements. A few patients experience bleeding, swelling or infection. Your surgical team will prepare you so that you'll know what to do if any of these occur. The most common undesirable outcome of breast augmentation is capsular contracture. This condition results when the normal scar tissue "capsules" that form inside the breast contract and squeeze an implant.

Currently there are two types of breast implants FDA approved for breast augmentation. The first is the standard saline breast implants and the second is silicone breast implant.

Benign tumors can arise from any of the cell types present in the nose or sinuses. Benign tumors do not metastasize or spread to other parts of the body, but they can grow aggressively and cause destruction within the sinus cavity if not treated appropriately. Osteomas are frequently found and usually do not cause significant symptoms. They occur most frequently in the frontal, ethmoid and maxillary sinuses.

Since benign breast tumors rarely develop cancerous cells, women diagnosed with fibroadenomas are often told to "watch and wait". Despite this recommendation, the majority of women opt to have their fibroadenoma treated due to uncomfortable physical symptoms and psychological anxiety. Open, excisional surgery previously provided the only option for removal of fibroadenomas. Surgery is still the most common treatment for benign tumors.
