Normally it is not necessary to clean the brine tank. In time dirt and silt can build up in the brine tank and if you choose you can clean it out. Let the salt level drop down very low. The night before you clean, manually regenerate the softener. Disconnect the brine line and dump out the old salt, (Do not dump the old salt anywhere near living plants). Reconnect the brine line, add about (3) gallons of water, and add the new salt.

A great deal of research has been done on this subject. According to The Water Quality Association (WQA), water softener regeneration discharge poses no problems to a septic tank or its related leach field. Studies have shown that discharge (waste) does not interfere with the system drain field soil percolation, and in many cases, can actually improve the percolation especially when fine textured soils are involved. The amount of salt placed into the brine storage tank has nothing to do with the amount of salt used during the regeneration cycle. Water will dissolve and absorb salt only until it becomes saturated. A given amount of brine (salt saturated water) contains a specific amount of salt. Primarily, keep your gutters clean. This will ensure plant matter such as leaves will not end up rotting away at the bottom of your tank and contaminating your water. This depends on the severity of your water problem, the size of your tank, and the amount of water that you use. A typical 5,000 gallon tank will stabilize anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. This will depend on where you are camping. When camping at a campground which has water at each site, filling the tank is not necessary. Just connect your hose (you did get a white hose designed for drinking water, didn't you?) to the city water connection on the side of your pop-up.
