In practical terms, for growing plants hydroponically hard water feeds should only be used for very hard water generally with a pH above 7.8 and a cF value above 8-9. Soft water feed should be used in all other cases and the water will need to be pH adjusted with either nitric or phosphoric acid.

When soft water is used instead of hard water the residue in the unit's panel can usually be cleaned by flushing it with water or using a soft brush.
