In most homes we recommend that fixtures over tables to hang 60" - 72" from the fixture to the floor. For Kitchen islands 70" - 76" from the floor will provide good light on your workspace without hanging too low.

The number one question regarding kitchen islands is do you have the room for one? You should be able to move freely around the island and approach it easily from any side. It depends on user preference. Proponents of low hang points say it's more like a free flight (unpowered) harness, and this is only somewhat true--having to balance 45+ pounds of motor/fuel will never allow it to be very much like free-flight. Consider your heavy bag as your opponent. With that in mind, the bag should be high enough to deliver a blow to the "head", so the top of the bag should be about level with the top of your head. If you have a very short bag, you may need to adjust this height somewhat. Unfortunately, this is normal.
