A rose bush, unlike a tree, does not produce shoots which steadily increase in size every year for as long as the plant remains alive. A rose stem grows actively and bears flowers for only a few years, after which the upper portion becomes exhausted. A new shoot then appears from a bud lower down on the stem, and the part above the new shoot dies.

The proper tool for most pruning is a sharp clean set of bypass pruners. Anvil pruners should not be used for roses as they crush the stem being cut. A saw or lopping shears may be used to cut very large canes (1/2 inch diameter or greater) All pruning cuts on canes greater than 1/4 inch diameter should be sealed with nail polish or glue to prevent cane borers from entering. NO! NO! NO! Topping severely injures and infects trees. The new shoots, which grow after topping, are usually long, thin, brittle and improperly attached. Unseen, but no less important, is the damage done to the root system. Deprived of foods stored in the crown of the tree, the roots can not obtain sufficient nutrients. Quite literally right bang on the 5ft 8 mark, just touching it in the evening...give or take 1mm. In any photo I have with a celebrity I am pretty much right around that mark, sometimes 1mm over, sometimes 1mm under 5ft 8. I usually wear sneakers that give 1-1.2 inches, if a celebrity has more or less shoe height I'd make mention of it. Nylon is probably the worst of all worlds. When a suspension arm moves up and down it does not move only up and down but describes an arc. This means that, for example an inner track control arm bush will be required to flex in two dimensions at the same time. In this example a metal bush will allow this movement as will a rubber or POWERFLEX bush.
