Our tours begin in June and end in October. Whales are feeding in the Gulf of Maine during this entire period. Many species of migratory cetaceans begin to arrive once the krill and other foods become plentiful in the spring, typically by April. Our tours are not limited by the availability of whales but by cold weather and changing ocean conditions. So actually, the entire season offers a great opportunity to see whales. Our success rates vary throughout the year. Southern Resident Orcas are sighted consistently April through November. Humpbacks have been sighted consistently for the past five years September through January. Gray whales are occassional visitors throughout the year as they transit seasonally. Transient Orcas are sighted all year but are most obvious during winter season when there is an abundance of seals and sealions to feed on. Most summer days we also know where to find Minke whales. This is a graph I made based on the weather history for Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. I couldn't find any accurate info for Isle Royale proper but, this seems to be closest thing to it. Based on experience, I would subtract about 1.5 degrees off the temperature and maybe, add about .5" to the precipitation. This gives you a general idea of the cycle though. On Inside Passage trips (Wildlife Discovery & Orca Humpback Odysseys), we see whales a number of times on most trips from both camps and kayaks. On any of these occasions we may have very close encounters. For our Wild Orca Adventures, we expect to see whales on average at least once a day. Some days we may see them five or six times. The weather has been beautiful in East Hawaii for the past year. We are in a drought condition so many days are sunny with a few cooling showers. This question can usually be broken into two separate questions: "When is the least expensive time to visit Hawaii?" and "When is the weather best in Hawaii?" Hawaii's "high" seasons are winter (mid-December through mid-April) and summer (June through August). These peak seasons lend to slightly higher rates due to popularity.
