The amount of time it will take you to prepare for the PMP certification exam will depend on how much experience you have as a project manager, how familiar are you with PMI's terminology, which book you use to prepare etc. Because the exam is expensive, you should spend enough time so that you feel comfortable. I think you should plan to spend four to eight weeks spending one to two hours per day before you take the exam.

The program is mainly based on the PMBOK. PMBOK stands for Project Management Book of Knowledge. When you become a member of PMI, you get the PMBOK on a CD. PMBOK is very short and concise. Most people find it a bit difficult to read. The current exam is based on the third edition of PMBOK. The approach that I will suggest is this - When you start scoring above 80% in the mock exams, you are ready to visit a Prometric center for the exam.

PMI takes at least 10-14 working days to process online applications. Online applications can be processed up to 4 weeks faster than paper-based applications.

After taking your exam, it can take up to four business days for your records to appear in the Sun Certification I7 database. In regards to the Sun Certified Developer for Java 2 Platform and Sun Certified Architect for J2EE Technology essay exams, it takes four to six weeks after submission for your score to appear in the database.

The exam is one hour in length. It is 30 minutes verbal and 30 minutes written. The verbal part is administered by a Bilingual America instructor and the written part is administered by a proctor. A proctor is a person in a professional position who is willing to sign an affidavit of authenticity regarding your exam.
