After installation, delete the existing RAID volume and recreate it with one disk configured as a hot spare. Please be aware that X-RAID does not support hot spare.

RAID Level 5 is a type of RAID that uses block-level striping (spreading out the blocks of each file across multiple disk drives) and block-interleaved distributed parity to spread the redundant parity information used to achieve fault tolerance across all the disks in the array. If any disk fails, the distributed parity data are used to compute the contents of the "virtual" (failed) disk. An advantage of RAID 5 is that there is no single dedicated parity disk causing a write bottleneck.

RAID 1" refers to a "Redundant Array of Inexpensive (or Independent) Disks" that have been established in a Level 1, or mirrored, drive set. A RAID 1 volume is a set of disk drives that are configured for data to be written to 2 volumes simultaneously. This configuration provides complete data redundancy in the event of a drive failure.

A Hot Spare Disk Cartridge is an additional Disk Cartridge installed in a 3U Server that is immediately available as a replacement if a hard disk drive fails. If an active drive fails, the Server continues to operate, no content or user-entered data is lost, and information that was stored on the failed drive is automatically restored to the hot spare. This eliminates the need for an urgent service call and provides peace of mind in marine and other remote installations.

RAID 1 has better performance compared to RAID 5, in particular, the write performance is much better. As web and email servers does a lot of writes, to log files, email spools etc, RAID 5 is not suitable for the server. In terms of redundancy, RAID 5 has 1 parity drive in an array (of possibly 7 drives). With a failure of 1 drive, the array performance is badly degraded. This may lead to much higher IO waits, and the server will be unresponsive.

A minimum of at least two (2) hard drives are required to create and maintain a RAID 1 volume. Unlike some other RAID configurations, RAID 1 volumes require an even number of drives to be used.

Many times information is still recoverable, depending on how the drives were re-formatted. A high-level re-format (using Windows, for example), will create what will appear to be a new "clean" volume - but the original data will still be on the disk in the "free and available" space. A low-level format routine (as performed using the controller software) will overwrite every sector, and in the process destroys the original data. Perhaps, but it wouldn't be the safest approach.

The expansion will still occur, but the expansion size will be limited by the smallest disk in the system. When you replace each of the smaller disks to the larger disk capacity, X-RAID will expand itself to utilizing all the space from this larger disk.

AeroPlayer 5.0 did not display the volume, balance, or artist information in the current track area. This feature was added in AeroPlayer 5.1.

Yes. As long as the volume is recognized by Windows as a disk device, Casper Tech Edition will support it. Yes. Casper Tech Edition is device independent. As long as the drives are recognized by Windows, Casper Tech Edition will support them. Before cloning a disk for use on another machine, the disk should be prepared for the cloning process by running Microsoft's Sysprep utility. Openfiler supports software RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6 and 10. To create a RAID volume first select the disks/or partitions you will use for the RAID device in the Volumes --> Physical Device Mgmt. section then proceed to the Volumes --> Software RAID Mgmt. section to create the RAID array. You must have at least two physical devices (individual disks or partitions of different disks) in order to create a RAID volume.

If your ESPRIMO uses SiS RAID please read the SiS RAID manual (you can also find this on your Drivers & Utilities Disc). For Intel RAID read the Intel Matrix Storage Manager Manual (also found on the Drivers Disc). Both manuals have step by step instructions. When pressing F6 to install 3rd Party drivers both the nVidia RAID class driver and the nVida nForce Storage Controller drivers must be installed (see pic).

Where X-RAID excels at large sequential transfers, RAID 5 performs better in smaller random access request pattern, fitting better in most office environments. Full volume management is available when you select RAID 5 (or Flex-RAID) mode. You can delete the existing volume and recreate one or more volumes, with each volume with different snapshot space and quota specification.
