Some people need a particular species of wood, because they are matching to an existing floor. When matching to an antique floor, it is particularly important that you order flooring that will be milled from material that was cut at the same time as your existing floor. This varies depending upon what part of the country you are in. Pressure Treated lumber is usually Hem-Fir in the West and Southern Yellow Pine in the East and South. The framing lumber is also regionally dependent. It can be Douglas-Fir, SPF (Spruce-Pine-Fir), SYP (Southern Yellow Pine) or Hem-Fir. We ask for this much information because, "Anyone you ask can GUESS at what spine you need, but the more information you give US the more EDUCATED that guess can be." The heartwood of naturally durable species such as western red cedar, yellow cypress and white cedar will all resist decay to some degree, but it is variable. The amount and type of natural fungi-toxic chemicals deposited in the heartwood determine how durable the wood is. The sapwood of all species is considered non-durable.
