That is a tough one to answer and I say that it is dependent on the user. If you take good care of your soap, and let it dry out between uses, our 4-5 ounce bar will last around a month as an all over body-care product. If you only use it on your face, obviously it will last longer. If you have a family using it several times a day, less would be the answer.

Most of our customers say a bar of our soap lasts them between 3-4 weeks. This is based on normal use. If you're lathering up six different times because you're enjoying the scent and experience, obviously a bar isn't going to last that long! As the saying goes - your mileage may vary.

The terms "soft water" and "hard water" are important here. Water is said to be "soft" if it has a low concentration of calcium and magnesium ions in it, and "hard" water has a higher concentration. The ions react with the soap you use to produce a scummy residue that is hard to wash off. If you use "hard" water you also will have a harder time working the soap up into a lather.

Our soaps usually stay 'good' for years. In fact, the older a soap gets, the longer it will last when you finally combine it with water in your shower. However, time does affect the intensity of a soap's fragrance. For best fragrance, we recommend that you enjoy your soaps within six months of purchase.

We hand cut our soaps and let them cure in the soap room for 6 to 8 weeks, before we package them for sale. They are ready after 3 weeks, but the longer they age and dry out, the milder they become, plus the bars last longer.

Coconut Oil, Soap of Coconut, Vegetable Glycerin and Water. Kirk's bar is made by a centuries-old, time honored process by mixing coconut oil with caustic soda. Caustic soda is made from sea salt. Coconut oil is thus converted to coconut soap, which is technically called sodium cocoate. During the process of making coconut soap, glycerin is also produced since glycerin is a part of natural coconut oil.

The bar weighs right at one pound and will make anywhere from 60-80 pieces of bait depending on what size hook your using. We have some customers that tell us they get 100 pieces of bait from one bar. NO, it smells very good. It has a strong scent of anise which smells like licorice. Our customers always rave about how good the bait smells.

Most commercial bars are intentionally dehydrated in the manufacturing process. Not so with handcrafted soaps. Set both in a wet environment and the commercial bar absorbs water much more quickly, hastening it's end.

Handmade soaps need special care in that they require to be well drained. They should never sit in a dish which accumulates water. A draining soap dish works extremely well. Please see our wooden soap dishes for this purpose.

Handmade soap needs to slowly cure over time to harden. As the bars harden, they become more mild. Like a fine wine, the longer the handmade soap cures, the better it is. We utilize the discounted water cold process method of soapmaking which allows us to cure our soaps for 2 weeks before they are ready for sale. i.e. Saponification has been completed and all traces of lye is used up and not remaining in the finished bars. Optimally, handmade soap should cure for 4-6 weeks.

I would suggest using Fels Naptha if at all possible, as it cleans the best in my opinion. Some other bar soaps to try (that have been used successfully):

Kirk's bar has an unlimited shelf life. The bar is still usable even if it has discolored after a very long storage period.

No the bait is soft enough for a hook to go into without crumbling, but it will stay on the hook very well and for a long time. The bait soap does not fall off the hook. That is one of the reasons it works so well and catches catfish.

Approximately 1 month, make sure to always hang it by the rope. Do not leave sitting in a soap dish since it may just "melt away".
