So is a course like that, or lack thereof, going to make-or-break an aspiring writer?

Amazon.com: Neverwhere: Neil Gaiman: Books
No, of course not. (For proof, look at the careers of the many writers who have not attended Creative Writing Courses at the University of East Anglia. It's most of the writers you can think of. Statistically, it's pretty much all of them. They did fine, didn't they?) I've never done any Creative Writing courses, but someone who had wrote in back in http://journal.neilgaiman.com/2004/11/probably-not -gold-watch.asp and talked about them.

WHEW!! It seems like there is a lot to do. How tough is this course going to be?

FAQs
There is a lot of studying needed for chemistry. Simply attending class and recitation will not suffice. You need to read your textbook, class notes, and work problems in the book. Taking good class notes is probably one of the most important things you can do to help in studying. You are encouraged to ask questions as we go so that things don't pile up right before an exam. Chemistry classes are not tough if you are disciplined in your studies. (I know, big IF !) I frequently hear this comment.

Can one make a living as a freelance writer?

The Freelance Writing FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions about ...
I've interviewed dozens of freelance writers earning six figures a year, some of them as little as two years after getting started. Most of the high-earning writers have followed one or more of these strategies: Develop relationships with magazines that use their work regularly, so they spend more time writing on assignment and less time marketing themselves

FAQ: Do you have any advice for the aspiring writer?

Official Website of Bestselling Author Karen Marie Moning
Yes. Read. Read. Read. Then write, write, write. And don't try to write what you think might be the next "trend". Write about what matters to you. As a reader, what I respond to in any book is the passion with which the subject matter is handled, and the individual "voice". You could tell me the most boring story in the world, but if you're passionate enough about it, and your voice is unique, you'd probably keep me riveted.

It's the best job ever. I get paid to sit at home and make up stories. Contrary to popular belief, however, I don't wear pajamas to work. I do wear houseshoes most of the time, though. There are some downsides. You have to develop a thick skin because you get rejected often. Others don't love your baby as much as you do. Enchanted, Inc.

This is a far-reaching and vague question, but has an answer. So far as we [UCS] can tell, the most obvious applications that will not appear to work in the same manner are: Exchange based E-mail (Outlook clients), users that telecommute back to their workstation from a remote location using pcAnywhere or Terminal Services and access to various network resources. This answer does not encompass all the problems, but the majority of what we have seen.

I am an aspiring children's writer. Can you critique my manuscript and/or help me find a publisher?

Children's Author Haemi Balgassi's FAQ
Sorry, but no. My own writing and commitment to my students (I teach a children's writing course) take up all my "work" hours. I make it a priority to devote the rest of my time to my family. I do wish you the best of luck, though, and invite you to read my advice for writers just starting out in the children's field. I hope you find my suggestions helpful :o)

I’m an aspiring writer. Will you read/recommend my stuff?

John Blesso | FAQs
I understand the desire to send writing to writers whose books you enjoy, but this is generally not a worthwhile thing to do. Many writers are lousy editors and we understand too well that there aren’t any shortcuts to duking it out with your material and developing your craft. Books aren’t typically published as a result of connections. There are just too many parties involved and they are not going to compromise themselves for a lesser product.

What do you like least about being a writer?

Bestselling Romance Novelist, Jennifer Blake : FAQ
Revision, the process of reading a book three or four times in succession while trying to remember every detail about the characters and story continuity and continually questioning whether sentences need rephrasing. It's meticulous, exhausting work that's also supremely boring because I created the story in the first place - and would much rather be working on my next one.

Did you always know you were going to be a writer?

Emily Pohl-Weary
Reading is the one thing I always loved to do as a kid. But I never actually thought I would turn out to be a writer until my mid-twenties, when a friend showed me a copy of his zine, Celtic Pamplemousse, and encouraged me to make my own. After that, it was as if I had no other choice. Questions about specific books... Please check out the links in the menu on the left side of this page for information about individual books...

Q: I'm an aspiring writer. Can you read my short story/novel and tell me what you think?

Brandon Massey, Official Author Site
I wish I could, but limited time simply doesn't make it possible for me to read the work of everyone who asks me. My best advice is for you to seek feedback from a writer's group (do a search online to find one in your area) and, once your work is polished, a literary agent.
