There is no smoky air around geothermal power plants -- in fact some are built in the middle of farm crops and forests, and share land with cattle and local wildlife.

In geothermal power plants steam, heat or hot water from geothermal reservoirs provides the force that spins the turbine generators and produces electricity. The used geothermal water is then returned down an injection well into the reservoir to be reheated, to maintain pressure, and to sustain the reservoir. Yes! You can generate your own electricity. It strictly a question of economics. Your most profitable opportunity is to displace natural gas/fuel oil used to generate steam. If after meeting the plant's thermal load, you still have a surplus of wood, you can generate additional steam and generate electricity for your plant use or to sell back to the utility or a broker.

Currently, geothermal heat is derived essentially from vertical borehole heat exchangers (BHE) used to heat family-sized houses. This type of application is widely used with more than 32,000 BHE installed in Switzerland (in 2004), and will continue this rapid development in years to come. Enxco claims that Hoosac will produce 84,000 megawatt hours (MWh) annually, which is high compared with similar wind power plants. Nonetheless, based on Enxco’s number, Hoosac will produce in one year the amount of electricity used in Massachusetts for half a day.
