Frequently Asked Questions

What is the moisture content of the logs you use?

Log Homes from Sitka Log Homes - Frequently Asked Questions-
Our logs are air dried in our construction yard to average moisture content of between 15% and 20% before we begin building. There are many log homeowners but only a few can claim to live in a real handcrafted work of art. One of our experienced log smiths using the highest quality full log uniquely creates each of our homes. Unlike machined log homes, you would never find a butt joint in our log walls. Each log is allowed to retain its character.

WHAT IS THE MOISTURE CONTENT?

Higuera Hardwoods- Quality bamboo flooring, Bamboo mouldings...
Our manufacturer's bamboo flooring is steamed or kiln dried to a proper level, the flooring's interior moisture content is maintained at 7% to 10% during the manufacturing.

Do you use a moisture meter?

Marine Survey FAQ Dixieland Marine
We own and use an Electrophysics GRP 33 Marine Moisture meter. We probably will not use it on the bottom of the boat during a standard pre-purchase survey (unless it is a dry-stored boat). They are useful to assess moisture intrusion into cored decks, or in wood cored transoms or stringers. Most people, including many surveyors, do not understand the workings of moisture meters or the constraints necessary to achieve a reliable reading on a boats hull.

What is the ideal moisture content for your home?

Authentic Pine Floors - Wide Plank Flooring At Its Best
Ideally, the relative humidity should be around 50% inside the home. This is measured with a hygrometer. Of course, in arid areas, this will not be possible with out a major humidification process. In most areas, a humidifier on a forced air HVAC system will elevate the humidity during dry times, such as winter.

Which are the best logs? Which should I use?

Wiki: GaleFaq
No respectable loggers will display any messages with the keyword "nolog". Since many logs are publically accessible to any Web user, you may wish to use this if you are mocking your employer. Long, long ago, embedding the string JJ-232 had the same effect, but it is no longer nearly as widely supported as /nolog. Bear in mind that nolog is not a real guarantee that your information will stay private.

WHAT TIME / TEMPERATURE / MOISTURE CONTENT COMBINATIONS ARE EFFECTIVE FOR KILLING MOULD?

FAQ
There is little information in the literature on killing molds found in indoor environments or on wood per se, but scattered data are available for food-spoiling molds or other wood-inhabiting fungi. Moisture content control alone (i.e., dehydration) will not kill many molds.

What is maximum weight moisture content measured at?

AND Weighing / MX FAQ
In the case of using MX/MF-50, sample less than 50g is measurable. “E” will be displayed if sample is over 50g.

What Moisture Content Level Do I Minimize Defects?

FAQ
Acceptable moisture content depends on the final use of the wood. Wood for fine furniture should be dried to 6 to 8 percent in most areas of the country, with very little variation among pieces and between the shell and core. (Figure II) Appropriate moisture content is also climate-driven. To determine the attainable moisture content - or equilibrium moisture content (EMC) - in your part of the country, hang small, thin samples of a wood species in your shop or plant and taking daily readings.

If I use Nordic, will I have any more moisture problems?

Nordic Power Desiccants
Nordic Prevents Moisture damage by controlling the Relative humidity and indeed prevents those problems. However, the ventilation holes in the container need to be closed and the number of units to be put in a container needs to be adjusted to the situation. If there are still moisture problems we can easily say that the number of units per containers currently is not sufficient and it is advisable to increase the units per container.

What about moisture level?

G. L. Pease - Frequently Asked Questions
This is a matter of personal taste and preference. I tend to like my tobaccos a little on the dry side, with about 11-12% moisture content, but others like their tobaccos much wetter. Tobacco is packaged in order to assure optimal keeping and aging qualities. The moisture content in the tin can be anywhere from 12-18% for natural tobaccos, and as high as 28-40% for some very heavily cased aromatics. This may not be optimal for smoking.

Do you use green logs or dry logs?

Log Homes Handcrafted by Mike and Laurie Senty
Both, depending on the budget and preference of the owner. For years we have built with both dry and green logs. In those years, green logs offered us close to, but not quite absolute perfection. Dry logs were better than green at that time. Over the years, we have tweaked our green log fitting systems, until we were able to offer a construction system that offers tight wood on wood joinery, after drying and settling is completed, using green logs.

Will we still use trend logs?

Interval Data Systems: EnergyWitness, Enterprise Energy Mana...
Absolutely. Trend logs are important to work out detailed problems that require a fine level of time granularity before you can make final decisions.
