First, whether you are housetraining a puppy or an adult dog, the approach is the same. Management! Manage the behavior to prevent mistakes from happening while you teach appropriate potty habits. Young puppies do not yet have the physical ability to control her need to eliminate for long periods of time, however, if raised in clean environments her instincts will be high to keep her area clean.

Two word answer - CRATE TRAINING! Using a crate is the quickest, safest, least-stressful way to train your puppy. This includes potty-training and teaching your puppy not to eat the kids toys, the furniture and everything else in his vicinity. I have in-depth information about this on my Training page, so I will not go into detail here.

Most owners have the highest expectations, with the least understanding, when it comes to teaching their dogs how to go to the bathroom outside, while on a walk or in a designated area. To really establish how you are going to accomplish this daunting task, you must determine these three things; Crate-training is the simplest and most effective way I know of to housebreak your puppy or older dog. However, not all puppies take to the crate.

Everyone has a preferred method, but it is true that most successful ways to housebreak or house train a dog involve patience and a consistent way of working with the pet. We recommend crate training as a way to give the dog a safe place to go to and a “den” that the pet will naturally want to keep clean. Combine this with consistent and frequent trips outdoors or to paper train and the Westie will often learn quickly.

It is best with an old dog to keep the diet fairly bland and low fat when changing over. I would suggest adding some probiotics to the diet to help restore good bacteria into the system to fight the bad bacteria and help increase immunity. You can do this by adding yogurt with live cultures in it to the diet or by getting some kind of probiotic supplement.

Allow your puppy frequent opportunities to go out. Puppies are not able to reliably control their sphincter until they are 6 months old. Be sure to allow your puppy to go out immediately after feeding and sleep. Give regular meals and avoid snacking. Teach your puppy to walk on a lead so that you do not have to carry it outside to void. Activity encourages bowl movements.

The optimum age is 6 months, however, we will consider younger dogs as long as they are leash trained and can take and understand a simple command. They should also be past their “fear period” where loud noises or other things do not distract or frighten them.

House-training a puppy is not difficult if you're consistent and stick to a schedule. You will probably be feeding three times a day. First thing in the morning, take the puppy out of its crate and quickly take it outside to where you'd like it to eliminate. Be patient, and as soon as your puppy starts to eliminate, CALMLY praise it with "Good dog" (or whatever term you'd like to use). When your puppy has finished all its business, take a few minutes to play or cuddle it.

For some people an older dog that has had some training, is housebroken, and is through with chewing is just what they would like to have in starting out with an Anatolian. Whereas others just have to have that little bundle of fur to nurture and watch grow. Some people feel as though they do not truly bond with a dog, unless it starts out with them as a puppy. Others may like knowing from the start the personality and size of their new dog.

This depends entirely on the personality of your older dog. Really old dogs will not like a puppy jumping all over them, especially if they have anything wrong with them or they are in poor health. If your dog is not old or ill, it may take some time to get them used to a new puppy, but they will give in eventually. Puppies are lively and spunky and tend to not give up on making friends. Just be sure to feed them separately so there are no fights.

Yes, you may have another dog in the house while training your puppy; however, it is a challenge. While it is good for the puppy to be exposed to other animals, it will be within a controlled and supervised environment.

It's best to keep the diet simple at first. This is particularly important for older dogs that have been eating a processed diet for most of their life. Start with 'Dr. Billinghurst's Meat & Bone Mince' only, for the first couple of days. You might wish to add some yogurt or a probiotic supplement. Keep meals small to begin with and don't overfeed. Once the dog is digesting the mince, start adding a small amount of the 'Veggies & Fruit '.

Most BMCs are very clean animals that don't like to soil their space. Crate training a puppy or dog is highly recommended for those times when you cannot directly supervise the dog. Later the puppy will be old enough to be trusted alone in the house. Except at night when he should go to sleep, do not use to crate for longer than three to four hours in the day. Nor should you use it as punishment as the puppy will view the crate as discipline and hate going into it.

This is a tough one. Every puppy responds differently to different training styles. It all depends on how you want to train your puppy and where you want them to use the bathroom. Some people don't want to take their dogs outside to use the bathroom. Paper training and litter box training are two options for this group. Paper training involves training the puppy to go on newspaper or piddle pads (aka weewee pads or puppy pads).
