The NCEP ATP III recommends that LDL be directly measured as a new feature of the guidelines. LDL is not directly measured in today's routine lipid panels. Rather, it is calculated using the Friedewald equation: [LDL] = [total cholesterol] ? [HDL] ? [triglycerides/5]. Thus, calculated LDL is falsely low in patients with elevated triglycerides, and it does not correlate well in patients with diabetes, coronary disease, or other atherosclerotic diseases.

Direct measurement is measuring any parameter/or (s) of the device under test with an instrument that provides an actual numerical value for the measurement taken.

CardioChek Lipid Panel Test Strips will automatically calculate LDL values (require CardioChek PA analyzer). If using individual test chemistries with either CardioChek PA or CardioChek analyzers, first test Cholesterol, HDL Cholesterol and Triglycerides using new, unused test strips.

Your level of LDL could come back "normal" on a regular test, even though there could be dangerous subfractions within the LDL. Lipoprint measures these LDL subfractions, which are believed to be a major risk factor for heart disease.

Although accuracy of light level is determined significantly by the quality of the light meter (including its photopic response characteristics) the basic laws of physics define that measurement should be taken a significant distance from the light source to obtain accurate results - the ICAO design manual specifies that measurements should be taken at a distance of 100 x the size of the light source.
