Generally, the basic categories or abuse are financial, physical, abandonment, isolation, neglect and self-neglect.

The physical signs of abuse or addiction can vary depending on the person and the drug being abused. In addition, each drug has short-term and long-term physical effects. For example, someone who abuses marijuana may have a chronic cough or worsening of asthmatic conditions. Stimulants like cocaine increase heart rate and blood pressure, whereas opioids like heroin may slow the heart rate and reduce respiration.

A person eighteen years of age or older who has a mental or physical dysfunction that interferes with his ability to manage his own resources, carry out the activities of daily living (feeding self, toileting self, self mobility, bathe self, etc.), or to protect himself from neglect, abuse or hazards without help from another person.

In one survey 15% of the staff interviewed at adult homes reported witnessing abuse of the elderly. The abuse ranged from verbal abuse (yelling, cursing, threats, etc.) to punishing residents by withholding food, excess use of physical restraints, and placing difficult residents in isolation. Since alcohol so easily permeates every cell and organ of the body, the physical effects of chronic alcohol abuse are wide-ranging and complex. Large doses of alcohol invade the body's fluids and interfere with metabolism in every cell. Alcohol damages the liver, the central nervous system, the gastrointestinal tract, and the heart. Alcoholics who do not quit drinking decrease life expectancy by 10 to 15 years.

The adult nomination process is very selective. Since the O-A exists by and large for the youth, with the youth only, serving in the leadership positions, adult nominations are carefully screened.
