Tall Fescue is the most popular turfgrass in the mid-Atlantic region. It is a very adaptable grass, which grows in full sun or part shade. To establish a lawn in western Washington, choose a combination of turftype tall fescue grasses and turftype perennial rye grasses. A mix that adds up to about 90% of these two grass seed types will grow well in either sun or light shade in western Washington. Turftype perennial ryegrass takes full sun and stands up to traffic. There could be several reasons, such as an iron deficiency, too high a pH or a lack of iron in the soil. I would suggest a soil test to determine the pH. Sometimes residents place rocks along the roadway in front of their homes to keep vehicles off their lawns. This is done primarily on residential streets that don't have curbs. These rocks can be real safety hazards. If a vehicle leaves the roadway, rocks won't stop these out-of-control vehicles, just damage them and possibly injure the occupants. You can also slit an old tennis ball and force it over the end of a six- to seven-foot piece of old garden hose. The Parks and Recreation Department takes calls from concerned individuals about grass that is over 1' tall or weeds that are on a property that has not been properly maintained. A certified letter is sent to both the property owner and the occupant. A timeline is given for the situation to be remedied.
