No malaria is not necessary for Brazil a good mosquito repellant is necessary and have your tetanus shots up to date.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (South East Asia page and the pages linked to this page) you only need to take it when you go into the forested areas around the Cambodian and Burmese borders. And even then you only need it when you sleep in these areas in a non air-conditioned room. Look at the page linked to above for the advised prevention measures at this moment. And if you do not feel certain about this matter, also consult your family doctor.

The first advice on this should always be: Avoid mosquito bites!! Especially at dawn, wear long clothes and use mosquito repellents. The answer on prophylaxis is a very difficult one depends on where you go and at what time of the year. The side effects are sometimes very strong and there is no guarantee that you will prevent getting Malaria with a prophylaxis. the main tourist points Malaria is however rare, except on land routes into the mountains and at the beaches.

Malaria prophylaxis advice is based on the presence or absence of chloroquine-resistant Plasmodium falciparum. Travelers to countries having resistance are advised to take either Malarone [Atovoquone-Proguanil] or Mefloquine. For legal reasons, we may not give any direct or binding recommendations for or against Malaria prophylaxis. There are constantly cases of diseases reported in the Amazonian rainforest. In any case, you should consult an experienced tropical physician and ask his/her advise on whether and if yes, which prophylaxis or stand-by medication to apply.

For prophylaxis, its effectiveness lasts as long as the drugs are being taken and ceases once the drugs are stopped. Self-medication is not encouraged because of potential side effects and possibility of emergence of antiviral resistance.

Prophylaxis is the regular use of clotting factor concentrates to prevent bleeds before they start. Injections of clotting factor are given one, two or three times a week to maintain a constant level of factor VIII or IX in the bloodstream. Prophylaxis can help reduce or prevent joint damage.

CDC does not recommend antimicrobial drugs to prevent TD. Studies show a decrease in the incidence of TD with use of bismuth subsalicylate and with use of antimicrobial chemoprophylaxis. Several studies show that bismuth subsalicylate taken as either 2 tablets 4 times daily or 2 fluid ounces 4 times daily reduces the incidence of travelers' diarrhea. The mechanism of action appears to be both antibacterial and antisecretory.

Sleeping under a mosquito net when mosquitoes are active at night. If possible avoid going out between dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes commonly bite. Wear long sleeved clothing and trousers. Dark colours attract mosquitoes. Apply mosquito’s repellents to exposed skin and clothing. Sleep in rooms with windows and doors screened with mosquito netting.

Some form of malaria prophylactic (pills) is usually regarded as essential. We strongly recommend that you visit a travel clinic or your GP to get the latest advice.

The money raised by the volunteers contributes to the necessary and recommended vaccinations for the placement cities. Malaria tablets are recommended for both countries. You are required to take any medication that is advised by your GP and/ or the Tropical Medical Bureau (or equivalent) before going overseas.

Although Georgetown and the coastal areas are malaria-free, precautions are very important in the interior. Efforts to reduce the incidence of malaria have been successful, so that the numbers of reported cases have been drastically reduced over the years, however there is still a risk.

We suggest that you check with your doctor regarding current recommendations and guidelines for traveling to your destination. No vaccinations are required to enter either Costa Rica or Mexico. If you are going to get vaccinations we recommend getting the process started at least 6 weeks prior to travel. Malaria is currently not present in the coastal areas we are visiting.

Malaria does occur in Central America and is something to be more concerned about if you are venturing into more rural areas. There are Malaria tablets that can be taken before and during your visit. Other precautions include keeping covered at Dusk and Dawn and whenever venturing deep into the Jungle.
