Taste is not a good indicator of whether the water is safe. Taste in water can come from substances either naturally found in or added to the water, such as minerals, chlorine, and various organic substances. Some substances impart a strong taste while others do not.

Water may have an undesirable taste or smell if it has been stagnant in household plumbing too long. A 3 X 7 flush should alleviate the taste and odor issues. Should the undesirable properties persist, decide if a particular faucet is at fault. Sometimes point of use equipment, water softeners, water heaters, or in-line filters, can be the cause of strange tastes or smells.

Sometimes, strange tastes or smells in water can be caused by it sitting in the water main for too long. This can be a particular problem near the end of lines. Even when water meets EPA's standards, you may still object to its taste, smell, or appearance. EPA sets secondary standards based on these aesthetic characteristics (not health effects) which water systems and states can choose to adopt. Drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants.

This may take place during the summer months. A combination of low water levels in our reservoirs and high temperatures are excellent conditions for the growth of algae. The algae then creates an oil which permeates the water and creates an almost muddy, musty smell and taste. However, the water is safe to drink. The most common natural reasons for Florida’s water to smell unpleasant is because of the surrounding environment. With a high organic content, the water may smell "humic" and the presence of sulfur compounds makes the water smell of rotten eggs. Filtration often resolves the problem. To be absolutely sure that disinfection is maintained throughout the water mains, small amounts of chlorine are allowed to stay in the water supplied to your tap. This may result in an occasional slight smell of chlorine when you turn your tap on or a slight taste of chlorine in the water. A good, safe way to overcome this smell or taste is to place a covered jug of water in the fridge before drinking - cool water always tastes better, but throw away any unused water after 24 hours.
