DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol and is used to automatically configure a host during boot up on a TCP/IP network and also to change settings while the host is attached. This means that you can store all the available IP addresses in a central database along with information such as the subnet mask, gateways, DNS servers etc. The basics behind DHCP is the clients are configured to use DHCP instead of being given a static IP address.

When your IP changes, it is said to be dynamic. Broadband internet access often uses dynamic addresses through DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol). You can usually determine a pattern for your host. It is not uncommon for your IP to change once a day, or once every few days. For instance, today your IP address might be 24.32.2.62, tomorrow you may have the ip 24.32.2.19. BootP initialises and automatically assigns the IP address of the instrument on Power up. The BootP server must have knowledge of the MAC address of the instrument. Whereas DHCP can be set to reinitialise or lease the address, subnet mask, DNS name, and other parameters, dynamically or at certain periods (24Hrs for example). This could happen if the DHCP timer is set to high and a change or restart happens to the DHCP server. Basically the clients get out of sync with the server and it could take as long as the DHCP timer was set to get back in sync. Perform the steps below on the server that currently hosts the DHCP Server service. Be warned that while doing this no DHCP clients will be able to start TCP/IP so this should be done outside working hours. Log on as an Administrator and stop DHCP (Start - Settings - Control Panel - Services - Microsoft DHCP server - Stop).
