You need not own one since printers are located near classrooms, in residence halls, in the library, and in computer labs. You may wish to buy a printer for your convenience; however, Rose-Hulman will not be responsible for it in any way.

ACU provides each computer lab in the residence halls and several other labs with a laser printer. Each student is given a $15 printing balance to spend in these specific labs. The charge for printing in these labs is 10 cents a page. Once your $15 is used, the resulting balance will be billed to your student account monthly. You can see your current balance on myACU under the "Records" tab.

A typical question is: "I have a [printer model] and the main board appears to have gone out. Well actually it powers on normally without any errors in the idiot lights but it will no longer print. What do I need to fix it?" The printer's lights and how they blink provide error information. Check Apple's site for PDF's of manuals for your printer, if you don't have the manual in hand, and see if you can match the pattern of lights to specific errors.

Depending on your printer/system the number of prints per ribbon varies. Go to this system-specific supplies page to enter your printer/system, and find supplies that comply with your needs. Each ribbon description will inform you of the number of prints the ribbon allows. If you are printing dual-sided cards with color on both sides, you will need to remember that each side counts as 1 print, so a YMCKO ribbon that offers 200 prints, will only print 100 full-color dual-sided cards.

Non-AIT model printers - a light cleaning using a cleaning card needs to be done at 50 badges. A more thorough cleaning should be done at least every 200 badges, or more frequently in dirty environments. Generally, light cleanings are done when the computer indicates that it is necessary. The printer driver keeps track of the number of badges printed since it was last cleaned and displays a notice to clean when it reaches the cleaning interval.

The type of receipt printer you need is based on the type of store you have and what functionality you want. Receipt printers can be impact (dot matrix), thermal, or ink jets. Thermal printers nice because they are fast and quiet. Typically stores that don't want the noise associated with an impact printer will purchase these. Thermal paper is now only about 1.5X the cost of regular paper. This makes the cost of a typical 6" receipt to be only about $.

You need one of the printer models covered as there will be hands on labs in the training and a teardown section. Tools are also require for the maintenance kit and tear down portion. Tools may be different from printer model to printer model. Each training module will specify the tools needed, however, the most common tools are:

Draft-O-Matic is a Window95TM based application. It requires a 486 Cpu with 8 meg of Ram, and 10 meg of free Hard Drive space. Sorry at this time, a Macintosh version is not available. However if you are running WindowsTM 3.x, please contact us as we do have alternatives available. A WindowsTM comnpatible ink jet or laser printer will work fine.

Clearly the better the printer the more enjoyment you can get from your photofiles. The majority of modern "photoreal" printers will produce very good results. Price from around £100 upwards. When choosing a printer don't get swayed by claims for 1200 or 1400dpi resolution. Of course resolution is important but its only one parameter.

Black and white and color printing is available in various computer labs around campus. After your set quota of free prints has been exceeded, there is a fee assessed, paid through the Buff OneCard. For more information, go to www.colorado.edu/cpi.

Just about any printer will work with e-Forms Center. We recommend a laser printer for the quickest and best results.

If you have a laptop or personal computer you are encouraged to bring it. ACA does have a limited number of computers available for use by artists-in-residence, but that may mean as many as 28 artists vying for 8 Macintosh and 5 Windows machines. Printers and peripherals are also available, as are copiers. Artists should bring specific software programs that they need in order to complete their work.

It depends on the type of business you have and the volume of charges you may accept. If you conduct business on the Internet, with large corporations, the US government, or have a lot of credit sales each day it may be a necessity. A printer provides a fast receipt for your customer and concise reports for your record keeping. However, if you don't mind filling out credit slips by hand or have infrequent credit sales, you can avoid the added cost of a printer.
