What is the Sequential M Gearbox (SMG)?

BMW M Registry - FAQ E36 M3 3.2
In 1997, BMW introduced the Sequential M Gearbox (SMG) as an option on the European-spec E36 M3 in some markets. Using the internals of the Getrag six-speed manual gearbox, SMG employs an electronic clutch operated by a magnetic valve that is triggered by pulling or pushing on the gear lever. Two further valves operate a pair of hydraulic cylinders that electronically engage each gear, thus allowing for shifts to occur in as little as 0.4 seconds.

What is the diff between the 1st SMG gearbox and the SMG 2?

Leo's Leisure Site
I'm driving a BMW 330 Ci Convertable with SMG the 1 st gearbox. (I believe it to be the 1st, cause you are explaining a lot of things on the SMG 11 that I surely don't have on mine.) There's a few things that I need to know, if you would be so kind. R or 1st gear, without the break padel being pressed. Then the gear console indicator reference shows reverse or 1st gear was selected, hoever the instrument panel display shows neutral. When trying ro pull off, there is no movement of the car. What is SMG or SSG?

E46 FAQ by Kris Linqusit
SMG is sequential manual gearbox. In a nutshell, it is a manual tranny without a clutch pedal. It does not incorporate the dreaded torque converter (which sucks up HP). See here (http://www.bmw.com/bmwe/pulse/bmwm/innovations/index.html) for more details. As of today, it will only be offered in the M3 starting sometime late this year (November 2001) and will have an approximate cost of $2700 MSRP. See similar questions...

What was SMG I?

Leo's Leisure Site
It's the first version of BMW's sequential transmission which was only available in Europe (on the E36 M3). far as I know it was not a big success. Most people I know don't like it. I have never driven an E36 M3 with SMG I myself. So, that's all I can say... Don't know whether Leo tried such things... perhaps he can add a comment on this when he's back from the US. Hilborn Fuel Injectors
No, it is batch fire. Sequential helps with low speed drivability but after around 3300 rpm, all sequential systems revert back to batch fire due to the physical limitations of the injector. See similar questions...

What is the difference between Batch and Sequential Fire and how do I know what I have?

PowerCard - Digital Fuel Technology
Modern Fuel injection systems are classified as either Batch Fire or Sequential Fire. In a batch fire system the injectors are batched together in pairs and fire as pairs. In a sequential system each injector fires independently. View the "Sequential or Batch Fire" page for further explanation and how to tell what kind of system is on your vehicle. What is the importance of of having a sequential gradient pump?

FAQ
Sequential pumps with calibrated gradient pressure have proven to be the best devices for reducing the lymphatic fluid from the limb in acomfortable and efficient manner. These pumps function in much the same manner as the body does by utilizing the muscle pump. The body uses various muscle groups to move the lymphatic fluid through the channels. Unlike the vascular system, the lymphatic system does not have a built-in pump. The vascularsystem has the heart to pump the blood through the body. See similar questions...
