A humidifier is used to add moisture to a room. A dehumidifier is used to pull moisture out of the air.

Vaporisers have a built-in heating element, which heats the your favourite herbs to a sub-flammable temperature, thus activating and releasing all the all active chemicals in the Herb of your choice. As you don't burn the plants only the active/healing chemicals and the etherical oils vaporise. This way you inhale all the good parts of the herb without the tar and carbon monoxide, which are hazardous for lungs and health. The first vaporiser was made in 1995.

Humidifiers function through the process of water evaporation as air is drawn across a pool of water. A cool passover humidifier tries to use the surface area of the water to maximize humidification. Therefore, these units are usually wide and flat, and are usually stand-alone units. Since they do not use electricity to heat the water, they can be beneficial if the power source is limited, such as when using 12V. Heated humidifiers increase the evaporation rate by heating the body of water.

Stand-alone humidifiers are separate from the CPAP machine itself and attach via a short tube. The breathing tube is then attached to the outlet of the humidifier chamber. The advantage of a stand-alone unit is that it can be used with a number of different brands and models of CPAP machines. Integrated humidifiers are designed for a specific make and model of CPAP machine, and are physically attached.

It is also extremely important for most people to use a humidifier, especially in the winter. I prefer a hot mist vaporizer, as long as there isn't any reason not to use one, such as someone around who might get burned. It should preferably be placed at your bedside every night, to thin out the mucus. Short of a vaporizer, breathing in steam on a regular basis by boiling water can be used but is not as satisfactory. We use a special apparatus in the office called a Rhinotherm.

The plates are made of cellulose fiber, essentially a paper product. These plates are completely non-toxic, child and pet safe, and FDA approved.

The period of adjustment can take up to three weeks. This is understandable since furniture, woodwork, carpeting, plaster and house plants will absorb the newly produced moisture until they reach normal levels.

A heated humidifier uses heat to produce moisture. The heat is adjustable for more or less moisture, and the chamber is much smaller than a passover humidifier. It is our experience from over ten years of specializing in CPAP equipment, that patients who use heated humidifiers have a much higher rate of compliance to CPAP therapy.

A passover humidifier is a chamber of water added to the CPAP to help moisten the airflow and reduce irritation to the nasal passages. Air flows from the CPAP, through a short hose to the humidifier, then into the six foot hose to the mask. The air picks up whatever moisture it can as it "passes over" the water in the chamber. Passover humidifiers may provide suffcient moisture with CPAPs set at lower-end pressures, but if not, there is no way to increase the amount of moisture produced.

integrated humidifier is a component to a specific CPAP that fits directly to the CPAP, eliminating the need for a second hose and in some heated humidifiers, a second power cord. A disadvantage is that they may produce less moisture. When used as passover humidifiers, the surface area is smaller. Integrated heated humidifiers, due to the close proximity of the heating element to the CPAP, will not become quite as hot as a stand-alone humidifier.
