SHOULD I PUT DAMPPROOFING OR WATERPROOFING ON MY FOUNDATION?

Waterproofing: Frequently Asked Questions about exterior and...
When building or buying a newly constructed home ALWAYS insist that contractor use a waterproofing material on the exterior foundation walls. Although these two products may look very similar, they are VERY DIFFERENT in how they perform. Many contractors continue to use dampproofing because once the foundation is backfilled the area is "out of sight, out of mind", and once the house is finished and sold it becomes the homeowner's problem if the foundation starts to leak.

What is the difference between damp-proofing and waterproofing?

Frequently Asked Questions about Concrete
Damp-proofing does not provide a permanent barrier where waterproofing does. Additionally, damp-proofing does not offer a guarantee against water infiltration where waterproofing can offer up to a lifetime guarantee. WHAT IS WATERPROOFING?

Waterproofing: Frequently Asked Questions about exterior and...
Waterproofing products are designed to "prevent" water penetration even under wet conditions such as hydrostatic pressure in the soil after heavy rain storms or spring thaws. Aquaseal's products contain rubber which provides superior waterproofing protection and allows the product to remain flexible even when it dries. This flexibility allows the waterproofing membrane to stretch as the foundation settles and bridge small hairline settlement cracks that can occur in the concrete or block. See similar questions...

What about drainage and waterproofing?

Frequently Asked Questions by Underground Home builder, Davi...
Dave Caves Construction assures proper drainage by correct placement of drainage tile with a granular fill. This tile drainage system is natural "gravity flow", not dependent on electricity supplied to a sump pump. Bentonize wateproofing is also applied. We use Bentonize since it is inorganic and stable underground. It will not deteriorate due to acids in the soil. (Further information on our Bentozine waterproofing available upon request.) FAQs
Unfortunately, yes. There are no barriers to stop any self-proclaimed handyman with a truck, a cell phone and enough money for a yellow page ad, from calling himself a waterproofing contractor. Now that the average teenager can produce a splashy website for pennies, the task of identifying the professionals from the amateurs is even more difficult. See similar questions...

DO I NEED TO USE ANYTHING ELSE ON TOP OF THE WATERPROOFING?

Waterproofing: Frequently Asked Questions about exterior and...
If your home is in an area with well draining soil and you have good quality backfill material, then you can carefully backfill directly against our products. However, if your backfill material contains rocks or stones that could damage the newly applied rubber membrane, then we recommend the use of a product such as our Aqua-Wrap. This 6mil polyethylene sheeting is highly puncture and tear resistant and will prevent rocks from puncturing the waterproofing. See similar questions...

Omega FAQ - TimeZone
You can do either one. Omega will give you a one-year warranty on their warranty service, and most watchmakers have a warranty on their work also. Property owners often insist that something is done to try to prevent water from entering the basement in both new and remodeling construction projects. Most local building codes require that "an exterior coating" be applied to the foundation walls before backfilling.
