Most scooters operate via an automatic transmission, so it's rather like riding and using the controls on a cycle... but when you twist the handgrip the scooter does all the hard work. It’s a lot of fun!

Yes, you can ride up to a 50cc scooter without taking any test providing you have held a full license before February 2001. You do not have to display L Plates and you can take a passenger on the back. However, if you want to ride up to a 125cc machine, you need: the Category A on your license, to pass a CBT and display L Plates. You cannot take a passenger on the back.

You can only ride your scooter on the road if its an 8mph model and is fitted with lights, indicators, hazard flashers auxiliary brake. This does not mean that a scooter with lights ect. but is only capable of 4mph can be on the road except when crossing from one side to the other.

Yes. The RTA requires you attend a pre-learner course. The course is two half days of training and requires no previous experience. You will be provided with a helmet, gloves and scooter (or motorcycle). The course is subsidized by the State government and only costs $68, which can be paid with a credit card when you make your reservation. Phone RTA on 132213. You will then need to complete a knowledge test. Sample questions can be viewed on www.rta.nsw.gov.au.

Students can use their own motorcycle as long as it is 350 cc or less. Current registration and proof of insurance (minimum required by law) will need to be provided prior to riding on the range. The motorcycle must also be in mechanically sound condition.

Not really. It took a little getting used to, but after a few hours of riding it started feeling pretty natural. In recumbents there are variations in handling just as there are in uprights—some are fast, twitchy racing models and others are smooth, stable touring models.

No not at all. They are a lot easier to ride than a proper motorcycle because they don't have gears, simply twist the throttle and brake with either the handlebar operated front brake or the foot operated back brake.

The ride will be challenging. The terrain in Tuscany is very rolling- not many flat roads to ride. Our planned route includes a long climb on Monte Amiata, and an optional century ride mid week.

Recumbent bikes definitely have a bit of "learning curve." Don't worry though, most new riders can safely ride a recumbent bicycle within half an hour, and are completely comfortable on one within a week. Not at all! In fact, if you have never ridden a bike in your entire life (perish the thought!), you could probably ride a recumbent trike. Just sit back, and go. With plenty of gears, you are free to go as fast or slow as you like. Steering is easy, and braking is even safer than a regular bike. Plus, since there is little chance of flipping over, you don't have to worry about hitting debris or stalling on a hill. Trikes are great for everyone!
