A digital mammogram takes less time to perform and typically involves a lower radiation dose to the patient. It also give us the ability to optimize the image, very similar to the way you optimize a digital photograph. Images are stored electronically so the is less chance of images being lost. In addition, images can be interpreted remotely, so second opinion interpretations may become easier.

One of the most recent advances in x-ray mammography is digital mammography. Digital (computerized) mammography is similar to standard mammography in that x-rays are used to produce detailed images of the breast. Digital mammography uses essentially the same mammography system as conventional mammography, but the system is equipped with a digital receptor and a computer instead of a film cassette.

Both digital and conventional mammography use x-ray radiation to produce an image of the breast; however, conventional mammography stores the image directly on film, whereas digital mammography takes an electronic image of the breast and stores it directly in a computer. This allows the recorded data to be enhanced, magnified, or manipulated for further evaluation.

Recent studies indicate a higher cancer detection rate of digital mammography in certain patients, including those with dense breasts, those under 50 years old, and those who are pre- or peri-menopausal.

Digital mammography is similar to standard mammography in that x-rays are used to produce detailed images of the breast. In January 2000, the FDA approved a digital mammography system that may offer potential advantages over the use of standard x-ray film. Studies comparing digital and conventional mammography are ongoing.

It is quite difficult to answer this question in an objective manner. The first challenge is bringing the film image to the PC so that the both digital and film images can be compared side by side. this introduces several variables: The choice of scanning hardware, and the parameters of the scanning software. The next challenge is that digital and film images fall apart in different ways at the limits.

Will you be able to compare past analog mammograms to digital mammograms? Your analog mammogram produced only an analog hard copy film that was read by a Radiologist. With a Digital mammogram, your image can be read and stored electronically in digital format, and may also converted from a digital image to film for reading and storage. In either case, the images can be compared from exam to exam and from digital to analog.

Film is a great, fantastic 100 year old technology that has not really improved a whole lot on since it was created. Since I was young I really tried to stray away from those things that were old. But, I was a die hard fan of film and was very hard to convert to digital. This confused most people because I've been an extreme computer nerd since I was 10 and was into every technology out there. I was convinced only by print quality and the end product after months of testing.

I am strictly digital nowadays. In theatrically dark venues, the sensitivity of modern professional sensors is unbeatable!

Analog mammography uses x-ray to record images on film using an x-ray cassette. Films are then "developed" and produced and put on a light box and read by the Radiologist. With Digital mammography the x-rays produce a digital image on a screen while the patient is still in position. The technologist has the ability to review these in "real time" to determine image quality.

We both use digital high-end professional cameras, as we have learned that the best product we can offer our clients is from our digital cameras.

The famous photographer Douglas Kirkland recently commented about the digital vs. traditional film photography debate. He said, "Imagine a world where images have always been captured digitally, not on film." Then he asked us to further imagine that film was the "new" technology.

We made a transition in 2006 to all digital photography. Although we can shoot film on request (color, black and white) we prefer digital for many reasons, all of which are beneficial to both us and our customers.

I shoot digitally these days. There are a number of advantages to digital photography: every shot is like a Polaroid, we can see how we’re doing as we go along. Because there is no limit to how many photos we shoot (there is no film), and because we can edit, we’re free to play around and try things out -- which is often when we get the best shots.

We have converted to a fully digital system in the studio. This is a state-of-the-art, high end system with a resolution to deliver wonderful portraits in the larger wall portrait sizes. The added benefits are immediate viewing of preview, very inexpensive digital retouching and image manipulation, and previews "on the net" for ease of out of town family and friends to review and order.

We still have film, but use that as back up. Our digital equipment will allow us to make up to 30 x 40 prints of the same quality that we would get when we shot with our medium format film camera's.
