Corals can capture prey (usually plankton) by stinging them with their tentacles and bringing the plankton inside to dine on. In addition, corals rely on the photosynthetic products of algae for their food. Inside coral tissue lives a one-celled alga called zooxanthellae. Nutrients from the algae feed the corals, allowing them to grow and reproduce. Safe inside the corals, the plantlike algae flourish in the tropical sun.

Coral fragments are wedged into crevices and holes within the structure or attached using plastic cable ties or steel binding wire.

Our divers never damage an existing, healthy reef to populate a Biorock structure. In all cases, we transplant broken fragments of live coral that have been damaged by waves, storms, anchors or by other means. These pieces would almost certainly die as the fragments roll over in heavy waves and become buried in sand.

Coral larvae, which are millimeter-sized freely-swimming baby corals, will only settle and grow on clean limestone rock. This is why conventional artificial reefs made of tires or concrete rarely exhibit hard coral growth. But, when these coral larvae find a limestone surface, they attach themselves and start to grow skeletons. Mineral accretion is exactly what they are searching for. As a result, there are very high rates of natural coral settlement on Biorock structures.

Corals grow at accelerated rates with mineral accretion because the electricity flowing through the structure creates chemical conditions (high pH) at the surface of the growing limestone crystals and at the surface of the coral's limestone skeleton, greatly speeding up their growth.

Surprisingly, no. Anatolians tend to be "easy keepers", and an adult Anatolian will eat between 40 to 60 pounds of premium quality dog chow a month. As a puppy, an Anatolian should be fed a premium puppy food for the first year. Some breeders will use puppy food for the first 18 months, and then switch to a good adult food.

Corals live in oceans around the world. But only in clear, shallow, warm tropical seas do colonies of reef-building corals find the conditions they need to thrive. Clear, shallow water is vital for adequate light exposure to the single-celled algae called zooxanthellae in their tissue, which produces food for the coral. You can find coral reefs in the Indian Ocean and Red Sea, Pacific Ocean, Caribbean Sea and the Florida Keys.

The easiest corals for the beginner are the soft and their close relatives. Mushrooms, Polyps, and Leathers are easy starters. Next come the large polyp corals such as brain, frogspawn, and toarch. Finally, the most sensitive corals, the colorful S.P.S. corals.

A calcium reactor is not necessary for keeping hard corals. It is however, very helpful. If you do not have a calcium reactor, check your calcium level and carbonate hardness on a very regular basis. You will have to add calcium and carbonates often.

For fishes it is generally harder to determine since the variety and size of the fishes matter to make up the box.

Deep sea corals and sponges, some of the oldest animals on Earth, grow at the rate of just a few millimeters each year and live for thousands of years. In recent years NOAA and other scientific organizations worldwide have discovered that the majority of the coral species found in the world's oceans live in deep or cold waters. Deep sea corals are typically found along continental margins, seamounts, undersea canyons and ridges.
