RS422 can handle only one slave unit (e.g. a PTZ). Whereas RS485 can handle several slave units. Electrically the two protocols are identical.

Answer: RS422 is an earlier standard than RS485. If a card complies with the RS485 standard then it will comply with the RS422 standard. The most significant difference is that RS422 when using 2 wires to communicate to another device is simplex only, ie it can only transmit or receive in one direction and requires handshake lines to control the flow of data. There is no hardware UART (universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter) inside the RSC4x, but we have written an equivalent serial software driver to handle the same functions. The only drawback is that because it is software based, it is not possible to receive serial data simultaneously with doing recognition or synthesis output. The previous response gives information on the synchronous/asynchronous conversion required. The other consideration is level translation. RS232 typically uses +/- 12V for its signalling levels, these must be translated to 5V an 0V for CML modems. Further, the idle state on RS232 is a continuous mark (or binary 1) represented by -12V. The watchdog function may be enabled or disabled by configuring the controller's settings. When enabled, the controller expects to receive at least one character every 5 seconds. The character can be part of a command, or may be a dummy character that causes no action. If not character is received, the controller will cause the motors to stop.
