Addiction and alcoholism are chronic diseases which leave a person prone to relapse. As such, it is not unusual for a person to experience multiple treatment episodes prior to achieving long term recovery. Most individuals that experience long term recovery have relapsed at some point in their addiction recovery process and that relapse ends up being the springboard to abstinence.

The treatment of youth requires a very different approach, skill set and knowledge base than those required to treat adults. Youth have specific needs related to their physical, emotional and social development. It is important to know if the directors and staff members of any adolescent program have a history of successfully treating adolescents.

It is important to understand that there are no quick fixes when it comes to teen drug addiction. The average length of stay in residential treatment is thirty days. During the course of treatment program participants, families and treatment providers working together, may determine that a longer stay is required. Prior to admission however, there is no way to determine if longer term treatment is warranted.

Outpatient drug treatment, appealing to many who wish to remain with family, to remain working, and to avoid the expense and disruption of residential care; is unfortunately less effective than more intensive residential rehab drug treatment. Outpatient patients never get a real break from exposure to temptations and triggers to abuse and from the normal responsibilities of every day life, and are unable to focus as intensively on the needed lessons of recovery.
