This can be caused by a sudden drop in temperature or humidity level. When this occurs, some of the trapped moisture will leach back into the air leaving a crystal-like formation. These will liquefy once the humidity level increases. If you don't want to wait, simply pour water on them until they liquefy.

Ice crystals occur naturally on frozen products; however, excessive crystals - creating a snowy appearance - can indicate the storage temperature fluctuated.

To see why snowflakes look like they do, consider the life history of a single snow crystal, as shown in the diagram at right. (Click on the picture for a larger view.) Yes, all ice maker models can have the ice production turned off without turning off the unit. Ice production in models with digital controls can be turned off by pressing the appropriate commands as shown in the User Manual. In addition, ice maker models without a drain (BI and Combo models) have a bin arm that can be lifted up to a locked position to turn off the ice production. Remember to put the bin arm back down to resume ice production.

This is called an "ice dam" it is when melting snow often refreezes where the surface is colder.
