What is the difference between a bolt and a screw?

Frequently Asked Questions on Bolting Matters
Historically the difference between a bolt and a screw was that the screw was threaded to the head whereas the bolt had a plain shank. However I would say that now this could cause you a problem if you made this assumption when specifying a fastener. The definition used by the Industrial Fastener Institute (IFI) is that screws are used with tapped holes and bolts are used with nuts. Obviously a standard 'bolt' can be used in a tapped hole or with a nut.

Q)What is the screw-home mechanism?

Athletes and Knee injuries
This is the name given to the action when a knee reaches full extension and just as the knee locks into hyperextension the knee rotates in an outward direction just a few degrees. This has the effect of putting most of the weight onto the cartilage, menisci, and bones of the joint while giving a rest to the muscles of the thigh and calf. What allows for this is that the medial femoral condyle is slightly curved and the medial condylar notch is slightly longer than the lateral condylar notch. See similar questions...

What's the difference between a bass with a bolt-on neck and a bass with a set-neck?

LeCompte Electric Bass - Custom Bass Guitars
Well, up front it mainly has to do with the construction methods. The bolt-on neck, as the name implies, is secured to the body with screws and the neck can be removed. Bolt-on neck basses are generally considered to have a punchier tone. Set-neck basses have necks that are glued in place. The neck is not removable. With set-neck construction the neck joint can be contoured to feel more comfortable then a bulkier bolt-on style bass. See similar questions...

Why can't I just screw down the drag on the spinning reel?

Conventional Reels Frequently Asked Questions - Article by B...
Modern reels are a lot easier to use than old ones. There is a learning curve, but it's pretty easy. Most current conventional reels have an anti-backlash mechanism, a brake, that slows the spool as it turns over the course of a cast. This will save you a lot of grief, though you still have to use your reel hand thumb. Older reels, like the Penn Squidder, require more skill to use. There are a few modern reels without a brake, and we'll get to those. See similar questions...
