Is there a lot of off-road riding?

Nick Sanders - London - Timbuktu
No. Much of the journey across Spain and Morocco is well surfaced with high quality asphalt ad excellently surfaced. The road in Mauritania could be brand new by the time we get there, but presently it is well surfaced for the most part and pot-holed further south. Ride carefully around the broken sections and you’ll be fine. There is more piste in Mali and some softer sandy sections on the way to Timbuktu.

Mountain Biking -- What about off-road riding in the Hudson valley?

FAQ -- Frequently Asked Questions -- Bike Hudson Valley
We're leaving the serious mountain biking for somebody else's website. But for some ideas for gentle off-road riding, see Places for Families with Children. Actually when we started out riding, it was on mountain bikes, on trails and unpaved roads. Then we started to wander onto the public roads a little. Then we tried slick tires, and life hasn't been the same since.

How fast are recumbent bikes? Can I keep up with my road bike riding buddies?

Rebel Cycles
Like learning to climb a hill, you will need to train for a while until you are able to keep up. Don't expect to just hop on and go as fast as you used to, or you'll be disappointed. Rest assured, eventually you'll be able to keep up. And, you'll be a lot more comfortable than they are! It also depends on the type of recumbent you ride. Some models are more comfort-oriented, while others are designed for speed.

Question- What about riding on crowded streets with a lot of obstacles?

FAQ's
Answer- There are some situations where it makes more sense to de-couple the link bar and have bikes ride separately, especially with children. The link bar can be disconnected and stowed in seconds so it is easy to switch back and forth. Answer- Using the side resistance flanges eliminates the need for “side spars” for most applications. If the rack top will be loaded with substantial weight, “side spars” may be needed.

Why are you paving that road? Don 't you know that (insert road name) is in a lot worse condition?

LCRD - FAQ
Road paving decisions are made based on many different factors. The primary factor is the condition of the road segment. Some road segments are in "poor" condition and shouldn't be overlaid. These poor road segments must be reconstructed. Paving a road that may look pretty good extends the life of the road segment at a much lower cost than reconstruction.

Given your weight and the weight of the saddle you don't want to add too much more. Use small saddlebags(6" x 6" bags are big enough). Keep in mind also that because the weakest part of the animal's back is at the back of the saddle you don't want to put any significant weight there - ideally no more than that of a slicker or jacket.

Everyone can be helped by reviewing the basics. If this is remedial for you racers, just skip it. :-) Just thought I'd post a few things I've learnt lately regarding riding techniques and suspension set up on Triumphs.
