Fretting is a common problem with Tin Plating. This is surface damage created when there is relative motions and strong contacts between parts, usually during shipping and handling. The tin plating shows black or worn spots caused by rubbed or scratched by another part. This oxide does not effect the parts functionally. They are still solderable. Your container will turn black at the top for various reasons. If you do not trim your wick to approximately 1/4" before lighting, or if you burn your candle for too long of a period of time the wick will produce a large black clump causing the black (carbon) on your containers. The black you see is carbon. An excessively large flame will produce carbon due to lack of sufficient oxygen from the air in the jar to provide complete combustion. The updraft of hot gases from combustion hinders diffusion of air into the jar and that starves the flame of oxygen. The key for that perfect burning candle is wick maintenance. Over the life of an incandescent light bulb the filament begins to deteriorate and the particles will settle on the inside of the glass. In return the bulb will take on a grayish appearance and a slight decrease in light output may occur. For fluorescent bulbs only the ends will blacken as the bulb is burned.
