Enamel then was applied to the tough, vitreous coating obtained by melting sand or glass on hot metal, as is done with decorating metal dishes and flatware and in making durable metal bathtubs, sinks, etc. The term was applied also to hard, durable, dirt-resistant oil-based glossy paints, and for years, this was the type of coating associated with the term. When can I varnish my painting?

Technical, Watercolor, Misc answers, Jerry Yarnell
For oils, you need to wait 3 to 6 months for light texture. For heavily textured oil paintings, wait 6 to 8 months before applying a varnish. One or two coats of varnish are sufficient for oil paintings. For acrylics, you need only to wait about one hour after completing your painting. You will also apply one or two coats. A varnish is not necessary for acrylic paintings because they are self-sealing, but a varnish gives acrylics the shiny look of oils. See similar questions...

Should I varnish WoodBlocX?

Garden Ponds Designs, Building Raised Beds, Terracing, Garde...
Don't varnish WoodBlocX. Water will get under the varnish and turn it black within a year. Unless you want to treat it like a boat and varnish it every year! Do paint WoodBlocX with any exterior wood paint if you want it coloured, or just leave it natural. The natural green colour will last for several years before fading to a grey. You can always paint it later when this occurs. See similar questions...
