Initially we would recommend that you have a go at mixing a colour yourself, using the shades we supply, as it is possible to achieve an infinite array of colours. Depending on the depth of the ground colour, eg. dark wood, relative to the colour of the paint, eg. "Mango", it is recommended that three coats are applied for full coverage (this is also a requirement for commercial paints). The last coat will match the colour swatch. There are times when you might want a solid black for a specific effect, but on the whole I prefer to mix blacks for livelier color. Oil-based and acrylic paints cannot be mixed. Acrylic paints are water-based. There is a new type of paint out now, called alkyd paint. Although it is water-based, alkyd paint can be used with oil paints. You can never paint in acrylic over a painting previously done in oil paint. Yes! To experiment you should use small amounts of the powders - teaspoons, tablespoons, even fractions of teaspoons. Mix the powders together in a small cup, add a little water and stir well. Paint a sample on a piece of scrapwood or cardboard. Keep in mind the color will look lighter when dry.
