What do I do with the drain water from my sink (shower)?

FAQ
In most areas of the country, the water we use for dishwashing or showering is considered waste water or "gray water". It should not be dumped directly on the ground, but disposed of in an environmentally friendly way. This would include capturing it and transporting to a dump station. If dry camping follow the "scout" rules, dig a hole at least 8 inches deep well away from any water (stream, lake, pond....) and dispose of gray water in this hole.

What happens to the water we use that goes down the sink drain?

Frequently Asked Questions
This answer can vary from place to place. Most drains are either connected to a sanitary sewer system or septic tank. The sanitary sewer carries the wastewater to a treatment plant where it is processed to reduce and/or remove the wastes. After processing, the treated water may be released to the groundwater or surface water. Any place served by septic tanks must observe some special precautions.

kkmu
Yes. The food should not touch the sink. (However, on Pesach one should not drain hot food into a Chometz sink.) In our experience, the knife sharpeners are constantly bathed in water so they do not get hot. Therefore, as long as the sharpener is clean, it is permitted to sharpen on a sharpener that is also used for non-kosher knives. (Butchers sometimes subscribe to a knife-sharpening service. The butcher must ensure he is getting back his own knives after sharpening.)
