Nonimmigrant visas can be issued for a length of time as allowed by law, depending on the type of visa. All visas issued have an expiration date, before on which the visa holder must leave the country OR get the visa extended. All the extensions vary in length and number according to the type of the visa. Work visa for example cannot be extended beyond a period of six years.

The initial stay is 3 years. The extension of stay is in increments of up to 1 year. An O2 visa is valid till the time the O1 visa holder accomplishes his/her task.

On a visitor visa the maximum permitted stay is nine months. The visa is normally valid for three months or, in some cases, up to six months. Business persons travelling to New Zealand frequently for business purposes may be issued with a multiple entry visitor visa valid for a maximum of three years.
