Hand split and re-sawn cedar shakes have a split face, which allows the natural grain to be exposed to the elements. They are thicker than shingles. Our BC cedar shingles are sawn on both faces and have a smooth face. Taper sawn shakes are sawn as well but are thicker than shingles and are applied like shakes.

Certi-label™ shakes and shingles have been subjected to the UL 1897 fourth edition "Uplift tests for roof covering systems" with exemplary results. The classification for uplift resistance is expressed in pounds per square foot. The test method subjects a minimum 10 by 10 ft. test sample to various short term (1 minute interval) static pressures which represent the uplift forces imposed on roofing systems securement to a specified roof deck when exposed to high velocity winds.

Yes, homeowners can obtain a limited manufacturer's warranty, administered by the CSSB, when their Certi-label™ products are installed by a CSSB " Approved Installer ". Cedar shakes and shingles have only been tested on plywood decking. Make sure you use a very good quality hot dipped galvanized or stainless nails that are ring shanked to hold the roof to the OSB and check with your local Building Official to see if this type of application is permitted.

This is not recommended. Cedar shakes can create an uneven surface making it difficult to properly apply the insulated siding. Also nails do not hold well in old cedar shakes. We recommend shakes be removed.

It is unlikely that the cedar is causing the deterioration of the flashings: any metal will rust if exposed to certain elements in the air. Many tropical areas do not allow any kind of galvanized sheet metal on any type of construction.

Cedar shingles have 2 (faces) sides and the best looking face is installed exposed to the weather. The face you like best is the one that should be installed exposed to the weather. (Note: Machine grooved shingles are installed with the grooves exposed to the weather).

Use of galvanized roofing nails or staples is acceptable. Typical staples are 1.25" and should be applied with the crown parallel to the eave. Roofing nails should enter at least ?" into the roof sheathing.

Shingles, if installed in direct contact with metal flashing, will wick water through capillary action under the leading shingle edge. The water will tend to remain in contact with the flashing and build up in acidity. This acid-laden water will corrode flashing in a linear fashion leading to "line corrosion" or pinholes in the flashing. The correct detail is to raise the leading shingle edge on a cant thus breaking the bond between shingle and flashing.

All outdoor wood projects will last proportionately with the amount of moisture that is present. Wood shingles on a typical situation should provide approximately 25 years of service.

Yes, these two materials are compatible. It is even recommended that when installing a cedar shingle roof copper strips are attached to the roof ridge to help prevent moss build up.

Cedar tends to produce a warmer sound and ages faster than spruce. Spruce is brighter and ages more over a longer period of time. Visually, cedar is darker in color with a fairly tight grain pattern. Spruce tends to be very blond with a slightly wider grain pattern.
