Any summer month is good for halibut (winter would work too, if the fishermen didn't mind freezing their fingers). The big flatfish live on the bottom and seem little influenced by what's going on up above. For salmon fishing, however, you must meet the runs of fish returning to the rivers to spawn. A run can be as short as a week of peak fishing in each stream for each of the five species of Pacific salmon, and when that week happens varies in every stream.

Every summer month has something special to recommend it: late May and early June may still have snow on the ground and fewer leaves on the trees. This makes spotting wildlife (with their Spring newborns) easier. Late June and July feature stupendous wildflowers (including our famous fireweed) and, generally, warmer temperatures. This time period also offers the opportunity to experience Alaska's midnight sun.

The open Ocean is different then inside waters as the tide book is no predictor of ocean currents, many times there can be more current when the tides in the book are smaller. We had a 100% limit rate on all our trips last year both on the Washington and Canadian side. The only thing that could be problem is cancellation

The catch limit for halibut is two per person per day. For salmon (excluding King or Chinook salmon), the limit is six per person per day. When fishing outside the bay, only three of these six can be silver salmon, while inside Resurrection Bay, all six could be silvers. The limit for black bass is five per person per day; for yelloweye rockfish and lingcod, the limit is one or two, depending on the area fished.

If you are interested in hiking, the best time to visit is July through October. Trails are typically still covered with snow through the middle of June. Of course, this all depends on weather conditions. Aspen does not typically see a heavy first snow until October/November. Again, this cannot be predicted.

Several periods offer their own advantages: the first 15 days of January, and the period comprised between August 1 and August 15 are the best periods for hotel discounts. August is a great month until August 20 because car trafic is much lighter. May and June are usually great months for their mild temperatures. September can be great during an Indian summer, but the hotels get crowded. The period extending from right before Christmas to righ after New Year Eve is terrifically romantic.

Most visitors come to the Canyon from May through September. If you decide to come then, be aware that the high season, while beautiful, means large crowds and parking at a premium. In the off-season from October through April, crowds are minimal and seeing the Canyon with a dusting of snow is worth the trip! Beware that some parts of the park and some services are closed in the off-season.

Snow-wise, early December can be fantastic or a flop. If you can book last-minute then come when, and if, the snow falls. (Keep checking our snow report and last-minute deals.) Empty pistes are guaranteed and bargains can be easily snapped up - even the lift pass is cheaper. Christmas and New Year are very popular so the resort and pistes will be busy, and prices much higher. Christmas in the snow can be magical. January is much underrated.
