E-mail clients are used to compose, send and receive e-mail. They are software applications that are installed on your machine. The e-mail client "talks" to the server where your mail is sent from and delivered. An e-mail server is a powerful computer that manages mail by storing messages, routing messages to other servers and generating error messages when things don't work quite right.

Always configure your mail client to delete messages from the server once you download them. There is no reason to store messages on the mail server if you have downloaded a copy to your computer. The specialized search engine at http://kresch.com/exts/ext.htm contains information on over 1,500 file types. In seconds, you can (for example) discover that "gid" files are "Generated InDex" files created by WinHelp; or that "syd" files are backups created by Sysedit.Exe. Webmail's strength is in its ease of use and convenience -- it allows you to check on your mail from anywhere with a Web browser. But if you typically get several messages a day and want to keep copies, Webmail is probably not the best choice as a single solution to manage your messages.

Web-based e-mail means that your e-mail account is actually a web site, providing global access to your e-mail from any Internet-connected computer. Once you have connected to the Internet via a network or Internet service provider just visit http://mail.myutahjazz.com/ and log into your account. This is different from client-based e-mail in which you need to connect directly (most times from your own computer) to your network or Internet service provider to access your account.

The only things you should need are your username and password which you setup through the Admin Control Panel along with the POP server details which are tied to your domain name (where "yourdomain.com" is your domain name):-

Yes, most e-mail clients will allow you to configure a Directory Server profile to search for addresses. The settings are as follows:

Click Start->Run... and type a command line "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /reg in the Open box (change it if your OE is installed to different location). Click Start->Settings->Control Panel->Internet Options, select the Programs tab and make sure that OE is now a default e-mail client. Start OE and on the Tools menu click Options..., select the General tab and make sure that the Make Default button is grayed (it means that OE is now a default e-mail client).

Lawrence is currently standardized on Mozilla Thunderbird (Windows) or Mac Mail (Macintosh) clients and Webmail for web-based e-mail. We fully support these packages on any Lawrence-owned computer.

Choosing the program you use to access your e-mail will be determined in large part by your Organization, NCMail supports any IMAP compliant mail client. Your Agency should be the one to determine what client to support. Other Factors are your PC, operating system and your Internet connection. NCMail supports any IMAP and SMTP standard compliant e-mail client. Within some of our more popular clients, several preferences need to be adjusted for e-mail to work optimally (see Documentation).

Limitation is dependent upon the e-mail client used. With MS Outlook (Outlook 98, 2000, Express, etc.) or Netscape Messenger 6.2 and above, the number of accounts that may be configured is limited to the computer resources. With Netscape Messenger 4.79 and below, one can configure and run only one account. Only one account can be accessed in the same window when logging into webmail.
