Frequently Asked Questions

Can I hot-swap a disk drive that is attached to any Sonnet Tempo Serial ATA card?

Sonnet - Support
Yes, but it depends on the operating system (Mac OS or Windows) used. Sonnet Tempo Serial ATA PCI, PCI-X, and PCIe (PCI Express) cards only support drive hot swapping when used in Mac computers running Mac OS. SATA drive hot swapping is not supported in a desktop or server PC running Windows XP, Server 2003 or Vista. A SATA drive appears to the system as a not-removable hard drive and there is no mechanism in Windows to prepare the drive for removal.

Can the Tempo SATA cards co-exist with other manufacturers' Serial ATA cards?

Sonnet - Support
Yes, however, some other manufacturers' drivers may incorrectly assume a PCI-X Sonnet card is another SATA card; kernel panics may occur; the PCIe cards are not suspect to this problem.

How is Serial Attached SCSI complementary to Serial ATA?

SCSI Trade Association (SCSITA)
SAS complements SATA by adding dual porting, full duplex and device addressing, plus it offers higher reliability, performance and data availability services, as well as logical SCSI compatibility. STA will continue to enhance these metrics as the specification evolves, including increased device support and longer cabling distances.

Can I use Serial Attached SCSI hard drives in my Serial ATA workstation or desktop PC?

SCSI Trade Association (SCSITA)
While not native, SAS hard drives can be used on SATA desktops and workstations by adding a host bus adapter.

What is Serial ATA?

Serial ATA - Frequently Asked Questions
Serial ATA is a disk-interface technology developed by a group of the industry's leading vendors to replace parallel ATA. The group known as the Serial ATA International Organization (SATA-IO) owns the development of the Serial ATA technology and maintenance of its specifications. Scalability - Serial ATA is a point-to-point connection and allows multiple ports to be aggregated into a single controller that is typically located either on the motherboard or as an add-in, RAID card.

How do I install Windows XP on a Serial ATA (SATA) drive?

Hardware Knowledgebase - How do I install Windows XP on a Se...
If you are installing Windows XP on a system where you only have Serial ATA Drives you might encounter a problem where Windows does not seem to detect your Hard Drive and reports "No mass storage device found" during an installation (this occurs in Windows NT and Windows 2000 as well). This is because there are no SATA HD drivers in Windows XP/2K/NT and you need to load 3rd party drivers (just like with many SCSI drives).

Why is my SCSI, EIDE, Serial ATA drive not recognized during Windows NT/2000/XP installation?

Hardware Knowledgebase - Top Rated FAQs
EIDE, SCSI, or Serial ATA (SATA) drive is not recognized during the installation of Windows NT/2000/XP. The installer reports that there is no drive present for the Windows installation, even though the controller recognizes the drive. The drive may not be detected during the installation of Windows because you have not yet loaded the drivers for your EIDE, SCSI, or SATA controller.

Q12. Hard disk data rates have been growing ever two years. Why is Serial ATA being planned now?

welcome
A12. Serial ATA is an evolutionary replacement for the Parallel ATA physical storage interface and will allow future enhancements to the computing platform. Specifically, the thinner Serial ATA cable addresses OEM's concerns regarding airflow around the Parallel ATA cable and enables design of smaller PC chassis, as well as silicon vendors concerns regarding 5-volt tolerance support in future designs.

What is a Hot Spare Disk Cartridge?

Kaleidescape - FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
A Hot Spare Disk Cartridge is an additional Disk Cartridge installed in a 3U Server that is immediately available as a replacement if a hard disk drive fails. If an active drive fails, the Server continues to operate, no content or user-entered data is lost, and information that was stored on the failed drive is automatically restored to the hot spare. This eliminates the need for an urgent service call and provides peace of mind in marine and other remote installations.

What is hot-swap?

PQI Corporation
Hot-swap means you can insert or remove the device while the computer system is running without first shutting down the system.

How is CE-ATA different than Serial ATA and why is Serial ATA not being pursued for this?

CE-ATA
Serial ATA is a high performance disk interface designed for mainstream computing applications. Handheld and consumer devices have a different set of technical requirements including modest transfer rates and maximum power efficiency. As a result of these unique characteristics, CE-ATA is focused on defining solutions for highly cost-effective integration and maximum power efficiency that will facilitate the incorporation of digital storage into handheld and consumer electronic products.

Can I connect the drive using an extension ATA card?

Products&Solutions | FAQ for all DVD/CD Drive Models | R...
We do not support using the drive connected via an ATA card. Please connect the drive using an IDE connector on the motherboard. In addition, some motherboards have four IDE connectors rather than two. In that case, we would recommend connecting the drive using IDE-1 or IDE-2. For details consult the manual or the manufacturer.

What is Serial ATA (SATA)?

PCICASE GROUP -- CASES AND STORAGE PROFESSIONAL
Serial ATA is the latest standard in IDE(Atapi) devices. The maximum speed of Serial ATA is 150MB/s (the maximum speed of Parallel ATA is 133MB/s, the ATA133 standard). The cable for serial ATA has a minimum of 4 wires (extra ground wires can be applied), a 7-pin connectro and a maximum length of 1metre (about 3.1 feet). Because of the serial protocol only 1 device can be connected to each cable.

Q2. What are the advantages of Serial ATA?

welcome
High performance today and tomorrow: First generation Serial ATA offers 1.5Gb/sec performance compared to a maximum of 133 MB/sec for parallel ATA. Serial ATA plans for at least two more generations of performance enhancements at 300 MB/sec and 600 MB/sec with the same cables and connectors. No-cost impact for desktop PCs: Serial ATA drives are expected to eventually be at par with the cost of parallel disk drives and cabling.

Can I boot the system from a drive attached to the RocketRAID 404 card?

HighPoint-Support-FAQ
Yes. The RR404 card's has it's own independent BIOS, which allows operating systems to be installed to, and booted from, drives or arrays attached to it's IDE channels. The card supports most Windows operating systems (Win2k, XP, NT, Win98/ME), several versions of Linux (Red Hat, SuSE, Caldera, Turbo), and FreeBSD.

What is SAS (Serial Attached SCSI)?

PCICASE GROUP -- CASES AND STORAGE PROFESSIONAL
Serial Attached SCSI is the future version of SCSI. It will be connected via a serial interface and thus uses cables much more compact then "normal" parallel SCSI which leads to better airflow. At launch, expected to be in the first half of 2004, the speed will be 3 Gbits/sec. SAS will support up to 128 devices and a maximum cable length of 6 metres. SAS host controllers will also be able to be used for attaching SATA (Serial-ATA) devices.

What is the definition of Serial Attached SCSI?

SCSI Trade Association (SCSITA)
Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) is the logical evolution of SCSI that satisfies the enterprise data center requirement for scalability, performance, reliability and manageability, while leveraging a common electrical and physical interface with Serial ATA (SATA). This compatibility provides users with unprecedented choices for server and storage subsystem deployment.
