Cramping during the first trimester is normal, especially in the beginning. It is the uterus expanding and if over the ovary, probably from the corpus luteum cyst. This is especially common after robotic surgery about 2-4 days after the procedure. It always resolves as normal bowel function returns. Be sure to take stool softeners and eat small, frequent meals.

There should be no discomfort to the patient when an experienced sonographer performs the examination. Occasionally, patients may have some discomfort due to condrocostal arthritis (pain associated with the ribs) or fibromyalgia.
