The Virginia Tech Certification Authority is a service at Virginia Tech that is responsible for issuing and managing digital certificates and public keys for Virginia Tech affiliated entities. The VTCA is the core of the Virginia Tech Public Key Infrastructure (PKI). The VTCA guarantees the identity and the authenticity of the entities it issues digital certificates to by using approved policies and procedures outlined in the Virginia Tech Certification Policy (CP) document.

Virginia Tech is not in the communications business. The University is a facilitator and catalyst for the development of creative partnerships with municipalities, public utilities, non-profit entities and private sector companies to combine resources and expertise for the deployment of advanced, broadband network infrastructure and services made up of next generation technologies (see question # 5).

If you do not install the VTCA certificates, you will see annoying popup windows appear asking if you trust the VTCA when accessing secure services that use VTCA issued certificates. All faculty, staff and students at Virginia Tech are encouraged to download and install the VTCA certificates on their browsers.

McComas Recreation Center is open for VA Tech student use ONLY. War Memorial Hall is open to all VA Tech students, faculty, staff and their dependent and guest.

The university plans to test the system on a regular basis, at least once per semester. The campus community will be notified in advance of such tests. Depending on the type of emergency, Virginia Tech may or may not send messages according to preference ranking indicated.

Not just anybody can issue trusted SSL Certificates. If they could then there would be no trust in SSL - and it could no longer be used commercially. Instead only Certification Authorities, or CAs as they are commonly known, can issue trusted SSL Certificates. CAs have generally invested in establishing the technology, support, legal and commercial infrastructures associated with providing SSL certificates.

The Controller of Certification Authorities as the “Root” Authority certifies the technologies, infrastructure and practices of all the Certifying Authorities licensed to issue Digital Signature Certificates.

By installing the VTCA certificates on your browser, applications using certificates will automatically recognize and accept certificates issued by the VTCA.

When the Certification Authority receives a public key it waits for a user’s registration form. The Certification Authority makes further checks and once satisfied creates a digital certificate. The certificate includes some of the information the user supplied and the user's public key.

Now that almost everything is computerized, so are the GRE General Test and the GMAT! We are no longer able to administer the paper tests at Virginia Tech. Course-request for Summer occurs at the same time as for Fall. Course requests are submitted via Hokie SPA during course-request week around the middle of Spring semester.
