The program is Southwestern's answer to a growing need among adults to earn a college degree. You may earn a: Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Business Administration, or an Associate of Science.

You need reliable access to a computer if you want to take an online course and some video-based courses. Many video-based and correspondence course instructors prefer to use e-mail for corresponding with students.

The distance learning courses offered through Taft College DLI are open to anyone. Individual courses may have unique requirements, prerequisites, or testing requirements. Review the course orientations closely before you enroll. Be sure to complete the distance learning orientation to ensure that you have chosen the right mode of deliver.

Current students who wish to enroll in a distance learning course must obtain the approval of an Academic Advisor. Prospective students who wish to apply as a distance learning student should submit an online application and check the status "Berkeley College Online" at the top of the form. An orientation session will show students how to log on and move through the various computer screens.

Some students do find it hard to keep up with the units for this programme. We will ship a CD containing the training material and a USB software security key (LPT keys/dongles are also available). The security key protects the license ? so that only one person may use the system at a time. If you order the certification option, you will also receive a Webcam (with a built-in microphone). The Webcam allows us to "monitor" the certification exam. We need to ensure that the correct person is sitting the exam, and that no assistance is being received.

You generally register for a distance-delivered class in the same way you register for your campus classes. In some instances you may have to contact a separate campus unit, like a distance education office, to sign up. You may not even have to go to campus: many institutions have online registration systems; some allow students to pay tuition online.

The professor will indicate the evaluation procedures in the syllabus. However, given the nature of distance learning, participation in discussions and papers may be a larger portion of the final evaluation, and examinations may be a smaller portion.

Through the Web, you can take the 10 courses needed to earn Bentley's MST degree as well as the four courses required to earn a Certificate of Graduate Studies in Taxation, complete the MBA Concentration in Taxation or earn a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Taxation.

If you want to teach or develop a distance learning class, you must first make sure that the course outline is up to date and that the course is approved for teaching in a distance learning format. If the course has not been approved for distance learning, you must submit a Distance Learning Addendum to the Curriculum Review Committee through Curricunet http://www.curricunet.com/mission/ and get your course approved for distance learning.

A student may consider a distance learning course to meet prerequisites, accelerate degree completion, complete courses not conducted locally, complete courses when TDY or duty prevent class attendance, gain personal enrichment and satisfaction, or prepare for a second career. Some students find that independent study is their preferred method of learning.
