Dry beans are versatile, high-protein vegetables. As such, they provide the nutrition of vegetables but can also serve as low-fat, low-cost meat substitutes. USDA's Dietary Guidelines for Americans include dry beans in both the vegetable and meat groups.

Transportation of food donated by USDA for disaster relief efforts is normally handled by commercial carriers. Shipping arrangements are made by the supplier or, if food is being shipped from program inventories, by USDA's Kansas City Commodity Office. In some situations, the military or other public and private emergency assistance agencies are called on to assist in transporting food quickly to where it is needed.

Dry beans are legumes grown to the mature stage, allowed to dry, and harvested for the seed within the pods. Most U.S. dry beans are produced for human consumption. Dry beans are an important staple crop and are also used as animal feed in other parts of the world.

MyPyramid, released in April, 2005, replaces the Food Guide Pyramid. It's designed to help consumers make positive diet and lifestyle choices recommended by the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. It depicts the nutrient-dense, super-foods Americans should consume each day: It also stresses physical activity. Unlike the Food Guide Pyramid, MyPyramid, includes a online tool that consumers can use to personalize the Dietary Guidelines to their individual tastes and nutrition goals.

Nutrition and the Food PyramidThe food pyramid is an outline produces by the USDA that is used to guide proper nutrition. It is arranged along the lines of the five major food groups (dairy, meat, fruits, vegetables, and grains). New guidelines don't offer one pyramid for everybody but rather differentiate age and gender groups.

The Food Guide Pyramid is a guideline for all Americans over the age of two to follow a well balanced diet. bull; Carbohydrates, we need 6-11 servings a day. One serving: ½ cup cooked pasta, 1/3 cup cooked rice, 4 crackers, 1 slice of bread, or ½ bagel. bull; Fruits and vegetables, we need at least 5 a day. One serving of vegetables is ½ cup of cooked vegetables or 1cup raw vegetables.

Our plant is USDA approved, inspection # 21734. This means that all meat processed in our facility is, under Federal law, inspected for wholesomeness by USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service. We have a Federal and State inspector supervising the cleanliness and operating procedures of our meat packing and handling to make sure our meat is not contaminated. We use grade A, choice meats in our products. Some of the meats are pre-cooked and some are raw.

As one of the world's leading dry bean exporters, foreign markets are important to the U.S. dry bean industry. On average, the industry relies on commercial sales and Federal food aid donations in world markets to dispense about 19 percent of supplies. A substantial volume of U.S. dry bean exports is concentrated among relatively few countries. Top U.S. markets include Mexico, the United Kingdom, Haiti, Dominican Republic, and Canada.

Not recommended for small breeds, but many large breed and/or multiple dog owners reportedly feed this way (when budget restraints are an issue) and quite successfully. The reason being is that AFS product ingredients are very rich in all the necessary nutrients, plus fortified with natural vitamins and minerals (because we cannot be absolutely certain the soil that the free-range cattle are grazing on is complete and balanced at all times and on all days).

USDA can authorize the issuance of emergency food stamps when there is a Presidentially declared emergency or when grocery stores or other regular commercial food supply channels have been restored following a disaster. In order for a disaster food stamp program to be established, States must request that USDA allow them to issue emergency food stamps in areas affected by a disaster.

Dry beans are grown in at least 40 States with commercial-scale production in 18 States. North Dakota is the leading producer of dry beans with one-third of national output. Michigan, Nebraska, Minnesota, and Idaho round out the top five states.

Food Pyramid RecommendationsThe food pyramid dictates the number of servings you should have from the five main food groups, depending on your age and gender as well as activity level. For example, children are recommended to have from 1 to 1.5 cups of vegetable daily, older boys and girls have different recommendation. The largest amount is for men whose age is between 19 and 50 years - 3 full cups daily.

USDA's surveillance program for BSE draws samples of high-risk cattle that are then tested for BSE. More information on testing for BSE is available from the USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). Effective December 30, 2003, carcasses from cattle intended for human food that are sampled and submitted to APHIS for BSE testing will be held until the sample is determined to be negative for BSE.

Although there are federal grades for pork, they are not used in retail stores. The pork grades are used to facilitate packer-producer marketing. Many cuts of pork, especially those which have been cured and smoked, carry identifiable brand names which enable quality comparisons. The grade of a particular cut of meat is determined by the grade of the carcass from which it is cut. Quality and curability are major factors considered in judging and grading meat.
